Marchwood Military Port to stay open but under private ownership

Daily Echo: Marchwood Military Port Marchwood Military Port

ONE of Hampshire's biggest military bases is set to stay open - but under private ownership.

The Ministry of Defence wants to sell Marchwood Military Port under defence cuts that aim to save more than £4.3bn over the next five years.

News of the possible sale sparked fears that the base could close in a devastating blow to the local economy.

The port, which occupies a 300-acre site on the western shores of Southampton Water, employs 600 troops and 150 civilians.

But the huge facility, also known as the Sea Mounting Centre, is set to continue under another operator.

Peter Luff, Parliamentary under secretary of state of defence, said: "The current assumption is that Marchwood would continue to deliver Sea Mounting Centre services required by the MoD under private ownership.

"No other UK location offers the benefits available at Marchwood nor could deliver the Defence Sea Mounting Centre requirement as cost effectively."

New Forest East MP Julian Lewis described the minister's statement as "relatively encouraging".

He said: "There appears to be no question of the operation of the port closing down or being located to another part of the country."

However, Dr Lewis wants to know if a private owner would be allowed to carry out commercial activities on the site.

Associated British Ports (ABP) has expressed an interest in buying the land following the rejection of its plan to build a huge container terminal at nearby Dibden Bay.

Campaigners fear that a terminal could now be built on the Marchwood land.

Marchwood Military Port is situated on 289 acres of land, prime real estate by the water. The site is the sole military port in U.K, that is to say it is a 'military' not 'RN' port. Private ownership plans must surely therefore be referred to the monopolies commission.

The military: the armed services, esp the army.

If it were a Naval establishment it would be described as HMS.

Consider this.
Marchwood port is an expensive facility for the military to run
As I understand it the operating responsibility has bounced around between Royal Navy in Portsmouth and the Army at Wilton, all overseen by Defence Ministry in London.
The possibility of teaming up with a commercial enterprise has been on the cards for many years. Why does the Military need to load/discharge ships when this could be done cheaper by out sourcing (but under military supervision) and the reducing number trained military stevedores sent abroad to look after ship loading requirements in more sensitive areas.
However any commercial enterprise looking to use Marchwood for non military use would, I am sure, have to work on the understanding that military ships would always get precedence.
This may not always suit commercial cargo interests who want a degree of certainty about ship/cargo movement.
I reckon some one like SERCO might be interested as they have similar arrangements with the Military elsewhere.
Good thing for the region is that the port will remain in some capacity

As far as Marchwood is concerned the emphasis is on transporting army equipment however, dockyards are not referred to as 'HMS' only ships and shore establishments are. Plymouth and Portsmouth are not known as HMS Plymouth (proud history and served in The Falklands) or HMS Portsmouth (not a proud history surrendered to the French, hence no more HMS Portsmouth).

No. Not scaremongering. As a past resident of Dibden I know the proposals well and fought against them. Having spoken to a lot of Marchwood residents they all seem oblivious to how it was going to affect them and that although it's called Dibden Bay it may as well be called Marchwood Bay. I'm sure if ABP somehow put in an application to build something there in whatever capacity, the residents that didn't care would soon perk up. I no longer live in the area but oppose anything ABP plan to do this side of the water.

Naval shore establishments are manned and operated by the RN and given the description HMS eg HMS Collingwood.

Marchwood is not a dockyard, but a dock. A place for loading and unloading ships.

A dockyard is a place where sailors go for a bimble off their ships at 10 in the morning with a gash bag full of civvy clothing, get changed in the shore side heads, and then go ashore for the rest of the day.

Today, HM The Queen is in Portsmouth Royal Naval Dockyard which is not a ship, onboard HMS Ark Royal which is, a flagship no less, the lead ship of The Royal Navy, something that 17 Port Rgt will never be, or HMS Collingwood for that matter. My first ship was HMS Raleigh which is a shore establishment in Torpoint, my second ship was HMS Mercury which was a shore establishment on the South Downs, my third ship was HMS Glamorgan, which was a ship on the green and lumpy, and I don't mean the South Downs.

From the OED:
Military:adjective.
1 Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of a soldier or soldiers or armed forces; used, performed, or brought about by a soldier or soldiers or armed forces; appropriate to a soldier or armed forces.
Etymology: Comes from the Latin root 'miles' which means a soldier (mile means 1000 paces marched by said soldier).
.
A Dock:An artificial basin, usually with floodgates to control the water level, in which ships can be repaired, built, or loaded and unloaded.
.
Further observation:
The term Naval dockyard has even been used to describe a place without docks, such as the former Portland Naval base. Not to be confused, of course, the former HMS Osprey, which was an air station.

I probably spent more time under the oggin than you spent on it.[/p]
I probably spent more time on one wave, than you ever spent in the shower you crabmariner! You guys were a target from where I saw things. Whilst I was fighting the Tanker War you were probably busy counterpane hurdling with your bunkmates![/p]
Seems as if you have been listening to sea-going sailors. 'From where I saw things'? Didn't know you could see much from your nice, cosy wireless office. Linesman

if the article is correct and the military remain in overall control there is no way abp will be able to build 'marchwood bay' so you are trying to scaremaonger unnecessariluy my money is on no noticeable changes. some commercial ships at marchwood, perhaps, but VERY unlikely to be container ships as the jettys and cranes there are set up to take them (unless the ships are quite small)
So if 'you know the proposals well' you know the specific area the Dibden project covered.
marchwood military Port is outside of this area and will remain a completely differnt issue
I bet you were also one of the majority of residents who moved to Dibden after the Bay was filled in and marked down for future port development then complianed about it

this is just one tiny part of it. there,s a lot more to come and some of it is a lot worse than this. the lisbon treaty is designed to make the rich and powerful more rich and more powerful, and give them control over every ordinary person in the EU. and that includes you

Being invaded by stealth so the next generations have no future and become second class citizens in our own country whilst being dictated to by the new european order who wish to destroy the English once and for all.
Oh just like has happened in America then. NOT. It's time you realised that the UK, which by the way was once made up of many smaller states, is a very small little island that can't even produce enough food to feed its own population. You will be wanting to make millbrook, oops, sorry redbridge an independent state next.
So you like being dominated by the european order as you have no forsight to see the damage and chaos they have and are causing our once great nation.Just sit back and watch the destruction then like all the other cowards and traitors.

A lot of truth in what Southy says.
The Thatcher regime sold off the electricity company, British Gas, BT, North Sea Oil, British Rail, Council Houses etc etc and we have nothing to show for it.

Did it fund a massive house building programme?

A hospital building programme?

A school building programme?

If any of the True Blue supporters care to answer 'Yes' to any of those questions, perhaps they would let us know where they took place in Hampshire.

I'm not so much in to politics as you and southy. but as a 'working man' i acytually see better hospitals, more houses being buuilt (and people bennefitting from the purchase of council houses), more police on the street etc.
However it was the Labour administration that (over) spent the money and we are all suffering.
That said, collecrtively, we all rode high on the hog based on credit.
meanwhile its interesting to see that southy's two utopian states ie N Korea and Cuba are respectivelysufferin
g from malnutrition and the introduction of capatailism!!
If it wasnt for Maggie Thatcher developing N Sea Gas I'd stick my head in the oven and end it all!!
Another thread taken off topic!!!

i see you believe in the rubbish of false capitalist propaganda, n korea and cuba have not introduce capitalism yet, and how are they suffering from malnutrition when the fatally birth rate has gone down a great deal it now only 0.01% less than canada, they are also living longer since they kick out the capitalist cooks, they are living 20 years longer now than they did before.
thatcher never developed n.sea gas at all, it was all ready developed, just like she never developed north sea oil, it was all ready developed, all she done was sold it of to the few like to her husband denise.

Peter
Think you missed out the Fred Woolley at Basset and the Childrens Convalesence at Bursledon and could probably add in the Isolation hospital at Millbrook too, going back many years.
However there are far more beds available now and more procedures performed than ever before.
You forgot to include the Nuffield and Chalybeate Hospitals which also perform some NHS procedures
To my mind the main problem with the NHS has been to assume mainstream medicine (and also the prison system) will deal with mental health problems when there were specialist hospitals to deal with these issues (ie Knowle and Coldeast locally)
