Police have closed a major road in Hampshire due to treacherous road conditions.

The A3 has been shut in both directions at the county's border with Surrey after heavy goods vehicles failed to negotiate a hill at Bramshott.

Officers say there are queues of traffic stretching five miles and have warned of long delays for motorists while the route is cleared. Meanwhile, Ambulance crews are battling to cope with a higher than average number of 999 calls.

Bosses have warned of delays reaching those with minor injuries and illnesses as they look to reach their most vulnerable patients first during the arctic weather this morning.

13.00:

Southampton Airport has fully reopened and flights are operating, company bosses have confirmed. The first flight today departed to La Rochelle just after 1pm, followed by flights to Malaga, Salzburg, Geneva and Chambery. Some knock-on delays are likely and passengers are being advised to contact their airlines for the latest information.

South West Trains is running a revised time table today as a result of heavy snow overnight. Services from Southampton and Portsmouth to London Waterloo are both affected. Company bosses say the usual Sunday service should run as normal tomorrow - but maybe subject to short notice changes.

12.00 Noon:

Hampshire County Council's salting lorries have been running continuously from 6pm last night on key roads and gritting will continue where necessary over the weekend.

Local highways offices mobilised "mini spreaders" to target shopping centres early this morning.

On the roads, First bus service was having to divert many of its routes through southern Hampshire after a series of road and bus stop closures.

Widespread disruption on the tracks and last night operator South West Trains announced a special revised timetable in preparation for the wintery conditions.
