Detectives have launched a hunt for a sex attacker who has struck twice in Southampton in just three days.

In the early hours of this today, a woman was sexually attacked as she walked home after an evening out.

It's the second incident in only three days where a lone woman has been preyed upon by a man at night in the city.

Officers have issued a safety warning following the attack, which happened at around 12.20am.

An 18 year old woman was walking home on London Road, towards the Jurys Inn roundabout when a man tried to talk to her.

She ignored him and he went away, but as she reached Andrew's Park, near the coffee kiosk and tennis courts, the man reappeared.

He pushed her to the ground and attempted to sexually assault her.

After a struggle, she managed to free herself and the man, who's described as Asian, aged between 20 and 30 and of 'tubby' build, ran off.

Police say the woman was left with facial injuries and was 'very distraught'.

The attack comes only three days after a very similar incident on Sunday night.

A 20 year old woman, who was heading home from The Edge night club in St Mary's Road, was followed and attacked in a subway in Brinton's Road.

Detective Inspector Charlie Rimmer, who is leading the investigation, said: "We would appeal to anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might appear to be, to contact us without delay.

"This information could be vital in identifying the offender.

"This is the second incident in only a number of days where a lone woman has been targeted by a male of a similar description while making her way home after a night out in Southampton - it is imperative we identify this person as soon as possible."

The officer added: "We would like to repeat our advice to all women in the city not to walk home alone at night if it can be at all avoided. Wherever possible they should take a taxi or walk in well-lit busy areas or with a group. We would also advise them be aware of their alcohol consumption, as drinking too much significantly increases their vulnerability."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bitterne CID on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity line anonymously on 0800 555 111.
