THEY’VE come up with ideas to fix the problems we all have with giving up our cars and going green.

As the Daily Echo continues with the Don’t be a Fuel Fool campaign, looking at ways around escalating fuel prices, a group of 60 inventors have come to Southampton to pitch their plans for improving transport and reducing emissions.

From cycle schemes to public transport apps, they’re all vying for a slice of £150,000 prize money to get their innovations off the ground.

This weekend, finalists from Ordnance Survey’s GeoVation challenge travelled to the mapping agency’s headquarters in Adanac Park, Nursling, to try to impress a judging panel with ideas that use geographical information to solve a transport problem.

The competition attracted 150 entries from across the UK and 28 ideas were picked out for the event in Southampton.

Entrepreneur Julian Tait was one of the contestants at the GeoVation event and came all the way from Manchester in the hope of developing his website idea, called Where Can I Go Now?.

He said: “People will be able to put in a certain amount of money they want to spend and a variety of different options of where you could go on public transport would come up.

“It’s a way of trying to get people to explore their city with public transport – rather than only ever using it for a commute or to get from A to B.”

A panel of judges from Ordnance Survey is now considering the ideas and the groups with the best innovations will be invited back in May for a Dragons’ Den-style showdown.
