A HAMPSHIRE family is in mourning today after a 59- year-old father was killed in an industrial accident.

An investigation has been launched into the death of workman Robert Mayne, which is currently being treated as “unexplained”.

A post-mortem examination has revealed he died of crush injuries.

Last night his family was too upset to talk to the Daily Echo.

The large semi-detached house at the top of a narrow country road in Titchfield was silent.

Mr Mayne, known as Noel to friends, had been working on a new superport in Thurrock, Essex, when he died.

He was a subcontractor when the accident happened and his body was found by co-workers at 4am on Saturday.

Firefighters used special equipment to recover his body.

Investigators have been visiting the DP World London Gateway construction site at the former Shell Haven oil refinery as the probe continues.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive have both launched inquiries into the death.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “This is a complex investigation into what is being treated as an unexplained death.

“It is too early to speculate on whether any criminal offences have been committed.”

A DP World spokesman said the firm was “fully supporting” the investigation.

Once completed, DP World London Gateway will be the largest port of its kind in Europe.

DP World is the company which runs the container terminal in Southampton docks.
