SIXTEEN-year-old Mirina Paananen, from Chandler's Ford, was celebrating after coming in the top five in the country for English Literature. She said she was delighted but relieved when she opened her envelope to find that she had 11 A*s, one A and a B.

Dr Sykes was full of praise for all pupils who had turned the school's GCSE day into another record breaker by outstripping last year's 90 per cent pass rate for those with five or more GCSEs at C grade or above.

He said: "We are delighted with the 2006 results. Our provisional figures indicate that no less than 91 per cent of the year group achieved five or more GCSEs at grade C or above. The figure even surpasses the result achieved last year and sets a new record as the best ever at Thornden.'' Thornden's results were out at 10am but anxious pupils arrived well before to make sure that they were first in line to get their hands on those all important envelopes.

In the southern parishes area of Eastleigh borough there was also plenty to celebrate as pupils arrived at Hedge End's Wildern School for results.

There was a slight fall on last year's hugh standards but almost all pupils - 96 per cent - achieved five A* to G grades, down one per cent on 2005.

The number of pupils scoring five A* to C grades slipped slightly but was still 84 per cent of those who entered.

Head teacher Jeffery Trelfall said: "This is another set of outstanding results for Wildern. Congratulations to all pupils who have deservedly done so well."
