IT STEADIED the most famous ship in the world in seas across the globe and now the anchor from Southampton’s former liner Queen Elizabeth 2 has pride of place in the city.

The 13 tonne anchor is displayed on a plinth outside Southampton’s Merchant Navy church, Holy Rood in the High Street.

A gift to Southampton from Cunard, the anchor is now the centrepiece of the newly completed Holy Rood Place, a key area in the “QE2 Mile’’, the pedestrian route which runs through the heart of the city.

The anchor was unveiled by Southampton’s mayor, Terry Matthews, council leader Royston Smith and Cunard president and managing director Peter Shanks.

They were joined for the ceremony by veterans from the Merchant Navy Association.

QE2 left Southampton for the final time in November 2008 and is now moored in Dubai waiting to be transformed into a floating hotel, and tourist attraction.
