AN ELDERLY woman has died after a car collided with two coaches on a major route through Hampshire today.

The 81-year-old woman, who was a front-seat passenger in the silver Vauxhall Meriva, suffered serious injuries in the crash with two single-decker coaches and was taken to Southampton General Hospital where she later died.

An elderly man, who was the driver, suffered less serious injuries, also went to Southampton General Hospital.

Two other people were treated at the scene of the incident on the A34 in Litchfield, just north of Whitchurch at 11.45am. A Hampshire Police spokesman appealed for information and added that the coaches and the car were recovered by police while the coach passengers were able to continue their journeys in alternative transport. The southbound carriageway was re-opened shortly after 5pm, he said. Anyone who was travelling on the A34 around the Whitchurch and Tothill area should call Acting Sergeant Steve Antrobus on 101 quoting Operation Glassline.
