Taxi driver attacked by passengers in Canute Road, Southampton

Taxi driver attacked by passengers Taxi driver attacked by passengers

POLICE are hunting two men who attacked a taxi driver after he picked them up from a Southampton nightspot.

The driver had picked them up from Leisure World and was travelling towards Sholing where they had asked to go. As they got near Itchen Bridge the men started getting abusive towards him so he pulled up outside the back entrance to Lucia Foster Welsh Halls in Canute Road and asked them to get out.

They attacked the car as they got out before one of them pulled out a knife. They ran off after another taxi and a car pulled up alongside them.

Police are now trying to trace the witnesses in the car and taxi that pulled up and also anyone else who may have seen what happened. They are also keen to hear from anyone else with information about the incident that happened around 3am on Sunday.

They are asked to call PC Cat Symonds at Southampton Central Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

and they dont want cameras in their cars, are they mad. Those people trying to stop this should look very closely at themselves.

My thoughts exactly..... they don't want cameras just so they don't get caught out fiddling their taxes.....

That's odd. The story neither says "taxi driver not attacked thanks to installed camera" nor "attackers apprehended thanks to installed camera". The police are, mysteriously, still looking for witnesses, despite these magical crime-busting cameras.

Well, CCTV hasn't really proven to be effective at either preventing crime, nor securing a conviction, so he's watching you in a very uninterested way

But you HAVE to turn the camera on first...?

As someone who deals with CCTV and convictions that result in them, i can assure you it does work and has many times caught individuals committing various crimes that would have otherwise:
A) Not been witnessed,
B) given proof of people in the act of their crime, and
C) reduced the number of crimes being committed.

Obviously nothing is 100% foolproof and time and time again people have committed crimes whether there are these cameras or not, but to say they haven't proven to be effective is utterly wrong.

If any of these two have previous and are known to the police, and if any cameras were turned on at the time, they've got more chance of getting a pull than if no CCTV was involved.

Many years ago I made the conscious decision not to drink so when I was on a night out I was able to drive home.

This should justify taxi drivers having CCTV in order to protect themselves from violence

My partner who got made redundant some time ago thought about becoming a taxi driver but, i would rather struggle that sit up night after night worried to death about incidences that are either becoming more frequent or are reported more often. They need cameras in taxi cabs.
Wether it is because people are making a run for it not paying their fares or assualt it is not fair people out there are just trying to make a living

Sorry but as far as I remember reading the column about taxi drivers not wanting cameras it was not wanting nothing about not wanting to keep cameras in cab?
Many at this moment haven't coughed up £300 & had the cameras installed they are trying to stop the installation.
As you've read above if they had it the police wouldn't need witnesses to identify the perps they would have them on camera,
This is a own goal by the anti camera brigade

Cameras do sound like a good security idea to me. But microphones seem too intrusive. I think being forced to have them would be a step too far and unacceptably intrusive. I think they should be purely optional.

How is it an own-goal? Unless these attackers were the "anti-camera brigade" (whatever that is) it's not an own goal. I couldn't work out the rest of your post, you seem to have been in a hurry. Something about not wanting to want to not be wanting cameras or something?

How does your decision not to drink justify CCTV for taxi drivers?

My first thought was where was the camera, and if there had been they would have been able to release footage or descriptions/picture

What a load of baloney, of course CCTV has been shown to help solve crime, and lower crime in areas where it is installed..... think of a woman who was murdered and her murderer was captured entering a warehouse with her in a box, and the thousands of other examples....

Give me the evidence that CCTV has lowered crime. Are potential burglars writing to people, saying "I was going to break into your house, but the CCTV put me off?"
