WELL done DJ Cook (Letters, December 13) in reminding us that pedestrians crossing while we turn left or right have the right of way, it is so irritating to hear a driver hoot rudely in these circumstances.

It was not, however, pedestrians that I want to write about but the dreaded cyclists.

There are innumerable letters in the Echo from riders who plead for space and consideration, and quite rightly so, but I hope these correspondents are the ones who try to be visible.

With the ever-growing number of cyclists on the road is it not time for some serious legislation regarding visibility, especially at night?

All should be compelled to wear high visibility jackets and use proper lights.

One dark evening last week I was driving on the Romsey to Chilworth Road when, between the village and the science park, a car approached on the opposite side with badly adjusted headlights, blinding me momentarily. When it passed there was a cyclist in front of me, no lights, dressed as if going to a funeral, in black, and he nearly did.

This is a common experience nowadays and these people do not seem to realise the danger and all the odd circumstances which occur putting them in lethal danger.

Instead of criticising drivers they should thank their lucky stars that there are vigilant, responsible people saving their lives every day.
