Hunt campaigners press for lifting of ban

The New Forest Hounds before their hunt on Boxing Day. The New Forest Hounds before their hunt on Boxing Day.

Hampshire campaigners have stepped up their bid to get the hunting ban scrapped, on the biggest day of the bloodsport season.

Organisers of the New Forest Hounds meet spoke out against the law yesterday, after dozens of keen hunters and hundreds more spectators joined the traditional Boxing Day event.

Their call came after hunting minister Jim Paice also called for the ban to be lifted.

Dr Graham Ferris, honorary secretary of the group, said attendance at this year’s event was “as I big as I can remember”. He added: “The numbers are going up, not just in the New Forest, but across the country. When there’s time available, the Government will hold a vote and I’m confident that we will win that vote.”

An estimated 250,000 people attended traditional Boxing Day meets across the UK yesterday – the seventh since hunting with dogs was outlawed by the previous Labour Government.

But the League Against Cruel Sports spoke out in favour of the ban, saying that public support for it has been “overwhelmingly high.”

In a poll commissioned by the charity, 69 per cent agreed the ban on hunting wild animals with dogs should remain.

Joe Duckworth, chief executive, said: “It comes as no surprise that the public has shown there is no appetite to waste parliamentary time on voting to repeal the Hunting Act.”

One vote against repealing the ban here. It is not a sport, it is barbaric. http://www.telegraph

I think some speeding restrictions are set in stupid places but I don't expect the law to be changed. If something is against the law then don't do it or face prosecution. The law is due to the wishes of the majority of the people ( something that is a strange concept to our glorious government )

Did anyone really expect anything else from a Conservative government? The only surprise is that it took so long for them to get this moving.

I hope and pray that enough opposition can be pulled together to thwart them, including their Lib partners.

There can be no moral justification whatsoever for hunting in this manner which should go the way of bull baiting, **** fighting and public executions.

If foxes are indeed a problem, shooting is far far better, not pursuing unto exhaustion and death by being ripped apart or being dug out of their earths.

I think you'll find that Paice has expressed a personal opinion rather than acted as a spokesman for government policy. If you want to take advantage of your beliefs why not ask the local bookmaker if he'll accept a bet and see what odds he'll give you?

A quick web-search puts the UK population at 62,218,761 in 2010.

So, about 61,968,761 is your answer - i.e 99.6% of the population

These are perverted people, who get pleasure from bullying the defenseless. This pastime belongs to a bygone age, when witches were drowned, and leeches were used to draw satan out of poor people.

Now, can we forget about them, and get on with the real issues in life?

you're right it is perverse. I (like most people) get not pleasure from seeing animals in pain, infact it saddens me. To see a fox ripped apart by dogs makes me sick just thinking about it, yet these people enjoy it.

I think hunting for fun (and let's be honest that what it is) proves that it is far easier to carry on behaving the way we have in the past and use tradition as an excuse rather than to take a step towards a more enlightened way of living. It will come about in the end but whether humanity will be around to witness it is another question.

Doesn’t research show cruelty to defensive animals is amongst the first signs of psychotic behaviour.
If this is the case then shouldn’t the police and the mental health authorities be taking a closer look at these people who enjoy this sick voyeurism of animal cruelty.
Better they are detained now than wait until they progress with their sick acts of cruelty to members of the public.

Many years ago I had the priveledge to hunt with the Hursley hunt from Romsey Square on more than one Boxing day. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the tradition and it was a sad day when envy and class politics destroyed this.
I for one would gladly vote for the return of hunting with dogs as i would gladly vote to leave the EU.
I am sick of the destruction of everything that is good about this country and the loss of the traditions and attitudes that make us great.

I can understand your point of view, but only by accepting that even people with no sense of decency and those that don't care if animals are made to suffer so they can get their rocks off are still entitled to a point of view. How the hell does chasing animals make us great? What made us great was slavery and exploitation, perhaps you would like those reintroduced as well.

Dear man, you can still enjoy the thrill of hounds and horses, just not after live prey. Class politics and envy you say, oh do grow up. People are not envious of you riding about on a horse, they are sickened by what the fox endures for a few peoples pleasure.

You can hide behind all the diversions
that Hunts try to create, but one logical
fact remains.
Any one who gets pleasure from
terrorizing and or killing any living
creature for FUN is just simply
SICK IN THE HEAD and you know that to
be the case. How would you feel if a
group of yobs chased and then killed
your cat and said they did it for
fun. They would be no sicker than you

Oh dear, Geoff51 and others like him
really do struggle to justify their sadism.
Why can they not just accept that when
they look in the mirror they see the face
of a sadist. They say foxes are vermin.
Well I have met many a keen gardener
who see cats in the same light. But they
do not kill them for even a sound reason
let alone for fun.
To accuse me of not being proud to be
British is an insult. Sorry Geoff51 but people who hunt animals for sport are
Sickos and need help.

Wow I'm impressed with the amount of time you have spent working out your latest post. Unfortunately you have made a very common error. You have resorted to criticizing people without checking your earlier posts where you where doing exactly the thing you are criticizing them for doing. This confirms my worst fears. There is a difference between critisizing and insulting and at no time have I insulted any poster unlike you who have just insulted me.

Let's not stray from reality here.
.
Hunting was banned on the grounds of hideous, unnecessary cruelty.
.
Class politics are being used to try to bring it back.
.
- Scientific and medical research have made us a "great nation".
- Technological advancement has made us a "great nation".
- Tearing foxes apart for some bizarre excuse for fun has had nothing to do with anything that has made us a "great nation". It has, however, made many of us ashamed of our past.
