AS FAR as morale boosting phone calls go – it was a knockout.

Jay Young couldn’t believe it when he took the call in hospital bed to hear boxing legend Lennox Lewis on the other end.

The former world heavyweight champion had called to wish him well following a devastating spinal injury which left 23-year-old Jay paralysed from the shoulders down.

The young Southampton man had been rehearsing a stunt at Windsor’s Legoland theme park when it went wrong and he suffered the catastrophic injury.

His family and friends set up an appeal to help raise cash for specialist equipment and raise his spirits with messages of support.

Chart-topping music producer Labyrinth has backed the appeal after being pictured with a poster but friends also got in touch with Lennox Lewis through social networking sites to ask for his support.

Amazingly the boxing star went one step further and rang Jay personally.

Jay, from Southampton, said: “I thought it was my mum so I didn’t know what was happening when this voice came on and said he was Lennox Lewis. It was incredible.

We had a bit of a chat about what had happened and how I was doing and he wished me well. We also talked about sport and chess, which we both like. I couldn’t believe it.”

Jay took the call in his hospital bed at Salisbury Disrict Hospital where he has been since he was transferred in May following the accident at the end of March.

As reported in yesterday’s Daily Echo Jay has been determined to get on with his life and on Christmas Day proposed to girlfriend Jess Smith, which she accepted.
