ANOTHER strong second-half performance ensured Swindon made a winning start to 2012 as they dispatched of AFC Wimbledon 2-0 at the County Ground today.

After a goalless first half, Town opened the scoring through a Paul Caddis free kick before Alan Connell added a second 14 minutes from time.

Paul Benson came on in the second half to make his Town debut and was twice denied by visiting keeper Seb Brown.

Eight mins: The first real chance of the game goes the way of Swindon when good work by Matt Ritchie on the right allows the winger to whip in a dangerous cross for Ronan Murray, but the young Irishman heads just wide.

15 mins: Town come forward again as a sweeping move involving Alan Connell, Ronan Murray and Matt Ritchie which ends with the latter delivering a low cross that is cut out by the visitor’s defence with Murray lurking.

28 mins: AFC Wimbledon have offered very little but muster a chance midway through the half when Town fail to clear a corner and the ball eventually falls to Chris Bush, but the defender lashes a shot well over the bar.

29 mins: Good chance for Town soon after when AFC Wimbledon fail to clear Callum Kennedy’s low cross and Murray pounces but close-range shot is blocked.

36 mins: Aden Flint heads the ball over the bar from Rtichie’s deep cross as Town continue to press for the opener.

58 mins (GOAL, Caddis 1-0): Town are ahead when Connell is fouled just outside the area and skipper Caddis curls the ball round the wall and into the back of the net.

60 mins: Ritchie goes agonisingly close to scoring a second for Town when his downward header from Caddis’s cross hit the bottom of the upright before the ball is cleared to safety.

66 mins: Jonathan Smith sees an effort from just outside the area hit the post before Simon Ferry launches a shot over the bar from the rebound.

76 mins (GOAL, Connell 2-0): The home side double their advantage when substitute Lander Gabilondo squares a pass for Connell inside the area and the striker smashes the ball into the roof of the net for his second goal in as many games.

84 mins: Town are awarded a free kick inside the area after a backpass by an AFC Wimbledon player. Ritchie square the ball to Connell, whose shot rattles the bar.
