AS THE winter vomiting bug closes wards in Hampshire’s hospitals health bosses are urging people to take simple steps to stop the spread.

Norovirus is easily spread in closed communities such as hospital, care homes, cruise liners and schools.

To reduce your chances of becoming ill you can wash your hands with soap and water after coming home from work or shopping or preparing food.

It is also vital that if you get a tummy bug you do not visit hospitals or your GP as it increases the risk of spreading the infection to vulnerable patients, such as children and the elderly.

Dr Graham Watkinson, Southampton public health consultant, said: “Winter vomiting bugs can cause a sudden attack of vomiting, often accompanied by diarrhoea and tummy pains.

“They usually only last for a couple of days and most people can recover by resting at home and drinking plenty of fluids.

However, more vulnerable people can become seriously ill and may need medical attention.”

If you are concerned about yourself or someone you care for who is suffering from the vomiting bug ring your GP. If you are not sure where to get help or whether you need to see a doctor call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
