POLICE launched a massive search and rescue operation today after a severely depressed man went missing from his home in Southampton.

Simon Wilson's Volkswagen Polo car was found abandoned at Paddy's Gap car park near Milford on Sea overlooking the Needles at 12.30pm on Saturday after he left his home in Priory Avenue Portswood in Southampton last night.

Police from Southampton and the New Forest launched a huge search operation for five miles west and east along the coastline from the car park to try and track down Mr Wilson.

The police spotter plane was also scrambled in the huge manhunt. It was joined by coastguards, the police marine support unit and the police's bloodhound as well as tracker dogs which all combed the area near to where the car was discovered.

Officers also conducted house to house inquiries to try and track him down.

Detectives searched as far as Hurst Spit and Hurst Castle.

Police say that Mr Wilson was known to be "extremely depressed" and had been reported missing by his girlfriend who had last seen him at around 5pm yesterday.

Sgt Nick Adams, who is leading the search for the missing man, said: "Mr Wilson is known to be very depressed and we are extremely concerned for his welfare.

"The area where his car was found is a beauty spot and very popular with dog walkers and locals. We urge people to keep an eye out for him and anyone who was in that area to call us if they have seen him."

Mr Wilson is described as 5ft 8in with a slim build. He has mousy coloured hair with a receding hairline. He sometimes wears glasses, has piercing blue eyes and a prominent nose. He is known to walk around with his hands in his pockets.

Anyone who has seen him or knows of his whereabouts should call Hampshire Police on 0845 045 4545.
