A WOMAN police officer was left with a broken wrist and had to undergo an operation after trying to stop a wanted man.

She was flung to the floor as she tried to get hold of the man in the doorway of a Southampton shop with the help of a community support officer, police said.

The officers recognised the 27-year-old, who is wanted for motoring offences, by chance during a foot patrol in Northam.

The PCSO also received minor injuries during the struggle outside the Banga Stores in Derby Road. The man ran off leaving behind his rucksack.

Police said the injured officer, part of Southampton’s safer neighbourhoods team, had to undergo an operation on her wrist as it is believed to have been broken in several places.

The assault happened around 7.10pm on Thursday.

The wanted man is described as white, Polish, 6ft with short cropped hair. At the time he was dressed in a black top and trousers.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or thinks they know where the man responsible for it is can call Detective Constable Gavin Jordan at Shirley Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
