£12m cash handed to south for housing

MILLIONS of pounds have been handed to Hampshire's leaders to tackle the county's "affordable housing crisis".

Housing Minister Grant Shapps confirmed £12.2m would be handed to Solent Local Enterprise Partnership, which covers the Southampton and Portsmouth areas.

It comes after a week in which the squeeze on housing Southampton was raised in Parliament and campaigners pointed to lengthy waiting lists for affordable homes.

Officials said the cash could would be used to "unlock sites for housebuilding blighted by poor infrastructure". This could include improving roads to cope with new housing.

Local Enterprise Partnerships are new business-led organisations in charge of driving economic development.

Mr Shapps also confirmed £2.4m of payments to Hampshire councils previously announced under the "new homes bonus" scheme. Southampton City Council will receive around £1.8m as reward for the new homes built in the past year.

This is peanuts compared to the £75m + that the government is about to steal from SCC Housing Revenue Account in order that they can pay ransom to no longer pay the annual £6m + extortion to central government. Why not give the whole £75m to SCC to provide more homes. Ooops, that won't happen as it will upset C'morons rich property owning party donors.

does that mean that scc wont be selling off empty flats and houses at a rate of 5 a month when they become empty. this will help the people on the waiting list

In the past SCC homes have been refilled very quickly. There is presently regeneration in hand where SCC seems keen on selling off homes to Housing Associations, they seem to be leaving blocks unoccupied for a rather long time to facillitate this (1 block in Townhill for over 2 years now). As Housing Associations charge a higher rent than the council, despite the taxation of council rents and the added help given to the HAs, this stinks.
