Residents fears over rail station car park expansion

A RAILWAY station car park could be expanded by more than a third – despite fears commuters will simply leave their vehicles in surrounding streets for free.

Civic chiefs want to spend £180,000 increasing Hedge End station’s car park from 114 spaces to 152 amid predictions rail passenger numbers will soar in coming years.

But people living in neighbouring streets say their lives are already being made a misery by commuters avoiding the £3 daily charge and using their residential roads to park for free.

They have gathered a 58-name petition claiming the station’s facility is rarely full and that an expansion will only make the problem worse.

Julian Young, who lives in Cheltenham Gardens, which backs on to the car park, said: “This scheme, we suggest, has not been thoroughly researched, and has not addressed residents’ concerns regarding the parking problem in their roads.

“It is unwelcome by local residents and is a very limited proposal.”

Council leader Keith House defended the cost of the project saying it would end up paying for itself.

He added that it was “better to address the problem now before it gets worse.”

The matter must go before cabinet members before a final decision is made.

If the resident is correct, and it is already under used, how will the extra cost fund itself? Please tell us Keith.

If the car park is rarely full now how will expanding it make street parking worse?

I regularly use the car park and although it is often near full it definetly doesn't need to be extended.

Ever since the charges came into place I have noticed more parking outside of the car park.

Forget the charging and bring back free parking again. The council is supposed to be encouraging use of public transport not charging even more. Come on council have some common sense please!!!!

I used to suffer this problem when I lived in Ryde near the hoverterminal. Rarely could I park anywhere near my house. The solution was to introduce resident's parking permits. All of a sudden, the streets were deserted. QED.

And it's to be extended on to the wildlife area, there we go again, gobbling up the green areas.

......... householders no more own the roads than motorists do.
I'll wager that many of the residents/car owners, who complain about the lack of street parking, are the same one's who rarely park their vehicles appropriately.....li
ke on their ruddy drives!
The very same peeps, that have stuffed their garages to the rafters with carp over the years and then park the car on the road..... totally selfish attitude.

Extending the car park is a precursor to a residents parking permit scheme or yellow lines they are just making sure they have the capacity in the car park first, they are not as daft as some people seem to think.
