Southampton residents to get free tickets to SeaCity Museum

Free Titanic musuem tickets for city residents Free Titanic musuem tickets for city residents

EVERY household in Southampton will be offered free tickets to the city’s new Titanic museum.

Letters will be sent to every home giving people the chance to go to the £15m SeaCity Museum, which opens in April.

It is the first giveaway of its kind in the country.

Council leaders say the goodwill gesture is a way of saying thank you to the people of Southampton for putting up with hard economic times and it was right that they enjoyed free entry to a “world-class” museum telling the story of their own heritage.

Nearly 100,000 households in Southampton will be invited to use their invitation for free entry for a family of two adults and three children or three adults, worth up to £25, by the end of the year.

The offer excludes school holidays and the first week.

Councillor John Hannides, the cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “This is a fantastic project and will put Southampton firmly in the national spotlight, attracting tens of thousands of people from around the world to our city.

“I am very pleased to offer these free tickets to our residents as we want local residents to be among the first to enjoy this world class museum. My message to residents is that this is your museum. The Titanic story is your story and part of your city’s heritage.”

The council claims its potential loss in income will only be £70,000 to £80,000 as it only expected 12,000 city residents to have paid to visit the museum.

Repeat visits and recommendations will more than make up the lost income, the council said.

So it will be left to 'tourists' and visitors to pay, and cover the upkeep.
Wonder how many outsiders will go?

There has got to be some catch in why Tory run council, which is cutting services destroying jobs, pleading poverty and asking workers to accept pay cuts is also going to give away tickets to Titanic Museum for free
.
Because there is greater chance of a vulture giving away the meat from its beak than cut crazy Tories providing something to people without any catch in it
.

Hannides Horror House is not going to be as popular as they predicted, so free entry will help in boosting the visitors figures and help the nasty party in saving its ugly face
.
Unpopular CONservatives need votes for elections in May, so approximately £80000 will be the payment from public funds for that purpose. Call it whatever you like; clever contribution to slush fund, buying votes or immoral introduction of corruption into local democracy

If it was as fantastic as Royston and his cronies had suggested there would be no need for free tickets to get people in. Discounted tickets maybe but free tickets no way.

We should get in for free, everybody should. Council money funding, there are other ways to raise revenue than charging entrance fees. Save up to £25.00 it says - that is, in my opinion, way to much to be charging for even an upmarket museum.

For example we visit the art Gallery - not my choice but my son and OH like it. It is free, once they have browsed we generally head for the shop where I have an awful tendency to buy things then the cafe for snacks or a meal. If we had to pay we wouldn't go because son only goes if i am going to the Library and OH follows along and they both rely on me(men!) to decide where we are going and I wouldn't be paying to go round a gallery when I don't like looking at endless pictures. So SCC get money for free entry which they wouldn't get otherwise

You appear to be the first who thinks that, just because a cash-strapped City Council is giving away £80,000 worth of free entry to people who would normally be expected to pay an admission fee, it will not be a White Elephant.

If a new restaurant opens, and gives away free meals on the first day, the odds are that, if the food was good, many would return as customers.

How many people do you think will take advantage of a free visit to this museum and make return visits when they will be asked to pay?

My forecast is that it will be a 'Two Month' wonder, and that it will be many years before that £80,000 is recouped.

As a matter of interest, I wonder how many visits you have made to the Tudor House Museum.

Yet you would rather we had Williams & Labour in power who would spend money on the old to get votes rather than try to bring in tourists & events to bring in more private jobs & to secure our cruise industry with the thousands of jobs lost if we lose it all to Liverpool.

On the contrary, I think EVERYONE who posts here would be delighted if it was a roaring success.

The real problem is, most of us don't think it will be- and that we personally will end up footing the bill for it. Worse, the Council will have to cut essential services which people NEED simply to make its budget balance having committed itself to this scheme.

Yes! I am a happy person - generally, but I am not a happy person when a great deal of money is wasted on an ego-trip.

This is not a case of Labour v Tory v LibDem v Green Party v Uncle Tom Cobbleigh, it is because was brought up during a period of austerity after WWII, and I consider that in the current financial climate, the money would have been better spend on something of use.

Tell me what they did to benefit the economy of the City? Please tell me - I'd to know just in case some good Southampton folk are daft enough to vote them in again!!!!!
I'm as happy as Larry thank you.

I see an eyesore folly being built using other peoples money, money that the people of the city will have to pay back, we were told by this council and it's leader this folly wouldn't cost anything,
I see a council who have failed to bring in private investment to build the folly.

You make the assumption that I am a Labour supporter, well George I am not one of those nor do I sit on the fence like a Lib Dem.

I just things as they are, I also see a council defunct of any ideas other making cuts to services and jobs and who because of the leaders arrogance thousands of people made to suffer during the bin strike and put children at risk because they tried to cuts children's social services to the bone.

I see ordinary people losing their livelihoods, because this council can't afford to pay them, whilst this council employ a PR guru and a Chief Executive on more money than the previous Chief Exec and making up a post of PR guru.

I see a council who allowed churches to take over two schools, against the advice of the educational and business institution's of the city, those schools were run into ground depriving children a decent standard.

I see a council take credit for a regeneration programme that really had nothing to do with them, unless of course you class creaming off millions because they held the budget as an accountable body making a difference.

I see a council that removed almost all youth services and workers across the whole city.

I see a council who have let those most in need down by making cuts and closing down adult social care homes and making cuts in home help services.

They did all this whilst they commissioned architects to draw plans for future that they no chance of achieving.

So continue to give us the links to the pipe drem, whilst I live in the here and now and believe in what has happened not what might happen.

Two things:-

1. I did not realise that a previous Labour administration was the topic under discussion and

2. I cannot recall any Southampton City Council, of any political persuasion, embarking on such a massive gamble as this, which is unlikely to get a retun on the investment in our lifetime.

Portmouth City Council came under a lot of criticism for the money invested in the Spinnaker Tower, but that is attracting visitors to the City, and the British Tourist Board list it as one of it's attractions.

Can anyone seriously think that this museum with attract anything like the number of visitors?

we were assured that no money for this would come from the tax payer! in fact we all knew that some would, in one form or another.

Of course it would be very satisfying if it were a success but I'd like to challenge some things.

1) the council won't 'issue' tickets I'm assuming and just send them out - they will have to find some method of people 'taking up the offer' which will cost money to administrate.
2) the council hold a database for council tax payers, I'm unclear whether they are permitted to use the data for this to send out other things not connected with council tax and billing......
3) City View is sent out through the post office and is not held on a database.
4) I think the council would be permitted to send out rubbish/recycling calendar because it is funded from council tax.....

Before the council go using data to score points for votes (or not as the case may be), someone ought to challenge whether they are permitted to use data for this kind of thing also.

I know for a fact that the data hounds in the council are very strict but I would be very interested to see/hear if they can do this......

I would also make a FoI application to see how many actually did take up the free ticket idea, and see how 'cost effective' it is, and ask the council how they are going to 'record' visitor numbers and highlight those who are using free tickets.

I cannot see this being viable over the long-term, sad as that fact is but am very angry that Hannides and co told lies about the funding and made assurances (including some of their stooges who post in these columns) that no taxpayers' money would be used for this!

Giant puppet in Liverpool for Titanic anniversary
A giant puppet of a girl will lead three days of street theatre through Liverpool to commemorate the sinking of the Titanic.

The 30ft Little Girl Giant is part of a free event to mark the 100th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the liner, registered in Liverpool.

Sea Odyssey takes place on 20-22 April in areas around Anfield and Everton, Stanley Park and the city centre.

The giant will also explore areas near Liverpool and Everton football grounds

The giant puppet was part of the 2006 Sultan's Elephant event which was held in London.

Wendy Simon, Liverpool City Council's cabinet member for culture and tourism, said she hoped the event would "transform people's perceptions" of north Liverpool.

She said: "Tens of thousands of people visit the north end for football matches, but rarely spend any more time there, so this is the perfect opportunity to show off the area and its potential, and as a result, hopefully encourage investment.

"These will be the first steps towards significant regeneration and investment and the event will prove to be a real catalyst for positive change, not just for the area, but for the entire city."
'Most complex event'

The event, which is expected to attract around 250,000 people, will follow a route through Walton Lane, Vauxhall Road and take in the views of the city from the brow in Everton Park.

The performance will be produced by French company Royal de Luxe, which created the giant spider for the 2009 La Machine event in Liverpool.

Liverpool City Council said the event would be the most complex event it had ever staged.

Local residents, businesses and arts groups are being given help to prepare for the event through a scheme designed to help local people work together.

Loosehead - I agree with your stance. If you look at towns and cities run by Labour, in nearly every instance, they are less successful, less attractive, less motivated, less likely to hold onto their best people.
>
Minimum wage - it is absolutely the wrong thing in a free market country and is detrimental in the long term to those at the bottom end of society. All that is happening is that more people end up lumped on the minimum wage with fewer opportunities to move off it. What it is doing is persuading more employers to go for a "flat organisation" that cuts out layers of supervisors, managers etc. Less opportunity to move up acts as a de-motivator with people becoming disillusioned. etc etc etc.

tourists who are not from your town. My great-grandfather boarded the Titanic in this city I planned to visit and perhaps a presentation of paintings dedicated to the centennial anniversary of the tragedy, but definitely Southampton
not up to the event.
On Google type , Titanic at berth no 44 Southampton 1912th
You will see the extraordinary good artistic picture that I have devoted your town in honor of the hundredth anniversary of the tragedy, but someone did not want to present a picture in your city.

What a joke you lot are! the people who are against this & that toe rag Williams the Labour leader.
Liverpool have announced they will pay back £9million to the government with their council tax payers money & are looking to start in three months.
The council here have invested through grants & fund raising or private money on a new Art complex,Cultural quarter,A new sea city museum & the expansion of the art gallery .the expansion of the Mayflower park & improvements to Town Quay & the proposed overhaul of the train station.
Yet you would rather we had Williams & Labour in power who would spend money on the old to get votes rather than try to bring in tourists & events to bring in more private jobs & to secure our cruise industry with the thousands of jobs lost if we lose it all to Liverpool.
What's the left wings dream? only public sector workers? Labour never fought for two major employers in this city & now are more concerned about their unite buddies than all the rest of us well I hope to christ the people in this city can see that & will bring us back to the most forward thinking council we've had for decades & that means voting Tory
You still have not produced your evidence that £5m IS NOT from the taxpayers ....... Now i wonder why.
.
Oh the rest of your post is the normal re-cycled garbage.
.
Talking of re-cycled ..... did you know that you can put tind in your bin !! ...... Fascinating for some posters !!!!
Funny yet again you can only answer a question with a question.
the selling of the Millbrook industrial estate is going towards the sea city museum & grants & fund raising has gone to build it so the only money you can be talking about is the money for that industrial estate as no money was taken from council tax payers or council workers.
So there you go thats where that supposed £5million came from so now tell me what evidence have you got to prove me & the council wrong?
Still nothing from you except garbage again.
.
18-45 yesterday (Friday) South Today part quote " The Council are still £5m short in their bid to raise the £15m .......
.
You have produced NOTHING and are as blind as one or other posters that offer nothing to a debate
I can't believe you ! You call what I have to say Garbage well maybe you should stop reading my garbage so I don't have to reply to the C=ap you come out with so please crawl back into your bubble & dream of a country that's not £1trillion in debt & to fund every thing people like you & the unions & Labour party want would put us even deeper into the red .
You are a COMPLETE IDIOT who is in total denial of the FACTS.
.
Proven time and time again that the Council are using £5m of taxpayers money.
.
Only you and one other can actually produce such a PATHETIC argument.
.
Words escape me on how to describe such an ignoramus as yourself ... !!
I have learnt that there are two ways to treat someone like you.
Time & time again I've answered your questions on many posts you have no real valid answer & you come out with name calling & insults which in a pub or face to face could lead to two actions one is we would come to blows.
the other is to know when you resort to name calling you've lost the argument & I've won & to walk away the winner.
As I feel resorting to physical violence is usually done by the person losing the argument & I know i've won GOODBYE & go & buy Big Issue it would agree with you.

Liverpools going to take at least £9million pounds from their tax payers to pay the tax man to bring cruise ships & tourists to their city & that's the Labour way of doing it.
This council have sold a non profit making Industrial estate which would cost a small fortune to upgrade & improve to attract customers( companies) to help finance a museum to attract tourists.
Belfast has been give Government money to build it's Titanic memorial we haven't so why the continuos slagging off of a forward thinking council after years of June Bridles Labour high taxing council?
everything they have built or are in the process of having built will provide jobs & with the increase in visitors to the city this should increase the jobs prospects of many city dwellers.
Labour want to favour votes but are scrapping OAP discount on tax yet go on about giving the money to OAP they talk with forked tongue.
Sooner or later the majority of people under Labour working in the private sector will be on the minimum wage which is 50% lower than the lowest paid public sector permanent worker.
So what! the public sector become the middle classed & their the only people who will have a job for live?
Some people on here can say what they like about other posters but they need to wake up to reality
As an OAP, I would remind you that it is the current government that has dramatically cut the Winter Fuel Allowance, at a time when the cost of fuel has rocketed.

It is the current government that has been content to see that pensions have not kept pace with inflation, but have taken no action on bankers' pay and bonuses, leaving it to the media to shame the bankers into not accepting the bonus.

Whether you like it or not, the opposition are not in a position to scrap any discounts or raise any taxes, only those in power can do that.
Linesman I don't know how much your pension & income is at the moment but didn't the rising of the tax threshold helped offset the cuts?
With future rises would that help?
My pensioner friend is upset as Labour want to scrap his 10% discount but if it would help stop the cuts to pensioners across the board I would agree with it

Really looking forward to going to the new museum, great idea to give local residents free tickets.

I cant stand the whingers who seem to wish the council didnt come up with wonderful projects such as the museum to put southampton on the map and attract tourists. We need more visitor attractions and more visionary thinking, well done!

This is the best thing for Southampton since West Quay and Ikea.

I am looking forward to the spitfire monument when they get round to it too. We need something to rival spinnaker tower.

I hope we get more ocean racing back to Southampton too.

Southampton has improved a lot over the years, and the range of restaurants and nightspots in the city is also now excellent.
