TRADERS battling the economic crisis are celebrating a deal that has saved almost all the free parking in a Hampshire town.
Shopkeepers say moves to limit the spread of pay-and-display meters in the centre of Totton could prevent stores being driven out of business.
Motorists will be hit in the pocket under plans to impose charges at the Rumbridge Street car park in April.
But free parking at two other sites in the main shopping area is set to continue following an agreement between two local authorities.
Proposals to levy fees in the civic centre and Westfield Road car parks have been dropped after the town council agreed to compensate the district council for loss of extra income. The two authorities have also decided to retain some of the free parking at the Rumbridge Street facility.
It means motorists can continue to use 361 of the parking bays in the town for nothing.
Trader Matt Kangarani, pictured left, added: “It’s good to have free parking. It does get abused but at least it stops some people going elsewhere.”

That is rather a stupid attitude, iron lady, how are you supposed to operate a shop etc without staff?
Do you expect them to pay for parking when most are on poor wages?
Its a pity Southampton City council did not do the same, it may help to rejuvenate the moribund shopping centre

Customers bring in revenue, for staff you pay out!
Not a stupid attitude, just common sense!

In any event, parking should be for customers as they are the only way for a business to be profitable.
Staff take on the job knowing they have to make their own way to work!

Rumbridge street already has a very low footfall, if they started charging for that car park, all the shops down there would suffer very badly.

Hardly anyone uses the Rumbridge Street car park - it's next to Rushington Roundabout and nowhere near the shops!
Introducing charges will make feven ewer people use it and be a complete waste of money.
Winsor Road car park is already chargeable, but there are normally spaces throughout the day because most people use the free roadside alternatives.
High Street car park tends to be busier, although this is generally people who work in the High Street (which is a mainly non-retail area).
ASDA staff are allowed to use store car parks, either with a permit or claiming charges back. However, not all ASDA staff are working at the same time and I have never found difficulty parking!
However, parking charges (even though I disagree with the introduction) do not necessarily kill off trade. Look at Romsey. It's very difficult to find free parking, but all the shops are busy whenever I visit.

Since my last comment this morning they have put up a Sign on the parking along the Water Lane & Salisbury Rd parking Today, if your over 20 minutes it’s going to cost you £125, like I said in my comment this morning an OAP was going to get a ticket of the Parking Warden for being 5 minutes over, in the end the Warden used common sense & no ticked issued, this wont happen any more as these Clamping company’s wont listen, how the hell did they get permission to cover this & does that mean that there’s no Traffic Warden in Totton anymore ?, surly this is Highway & there for Not on Private land hence they cant operate ?, please somebody tell me this is so as this afternoon Trade along Water lane is dead as customers have been scared off !, 3 cars in 12 spaces on a busy Tuesday afternoon !, There was no warning about this happening either as it’s taken the traders also by Surprise !
Totton Council/New Forest District Council made a big mistake with the so called “Improvements” in Water Lane a few years ago; they limited the spaces near to the Junction with Salisbury Rd/Water Lane from 25-28 spaces to just 10-12 with a new 20 minute only park. I use the post office there & on a very busy day you can be in there for near on 20-25 minutes & have had to plea with an over zealous traffic warden not to give an OAP a ticket because she was 5 minutes late back !. I often try & use the parade of shops there when there’s a space but quite often if I cant get a space I drive off now or if I do have time park in the Library Car park, Trade all along there has suffered because of that & if the free car parks becomes a “Pay & Display” that would the finial nail in the coffin for a lot of Traders !
