A HAMPSHIRE shipping academy is celebrating after a funding reprieve.

Warsash Maritime Academy is one of the industry’s leading providers of training and education, taking on 300 cadets from across the country every year who go on to work for cruise liners, oil tankers and container ships.

The Government provides £12m each year to subsidise training schemes across the country, but this had been under review as part of the spending cuts programme.

But Shipping Minister Mike Penning said a report had found that a seafarer who had received government support generated £14,500 more for the economy each year compared to an average worker.
