Travelodge plans new hotel for Southampton City Centre

How the new Travelodge hotel in Southampton will look. How the new Travelodge hotel in Southampton will look.

BUDGET hotel group Travelodge has unveiled plans for a multi-million-pound 84-bedroom hotel in the centre of Southampton, bringing 20 jobs.

A 1950s concrete office building in Castle Way, formerly occupied by Lloyds Bank, will be demolished to make way for the hotel.

It is expected to open early next year.

Travelodge bosses reckon there is still a shortage of rooms in the city, despite a number of new city centre hotels having opened in recent years, and are hunting for a further site in the city.

The majority of the 20 jobs will be offered to the longterm unemployed through the job centre in Southampton, Travelodge said.

The latest news comes as Travelodge prepares to open a 60-bed hotel opposite Eastleigh railway station in April on the site of the former Earth Club and Bar. It already operates a hotel in Lodge Road, Southampton.

CHG Developments, the owners of the Gracechurch House building in Castle Way, signed an undisclosed deal for the site with Travelodge after Lloyds vacated the building.

The 19,000sqft building has been on the letting market for some time.

Steve Tyler, development manager for Travelodge Hotels, said: “Southampton has a clear lack of hotel rooms, so we are delighted to have secured a great location for our second central hotel.

“We have not yet fulfilled our requirement in Southampton, however, and are actively looking for another site near the ferry terminal.”

Tony O’Brien, Travelodge’s UK development director, added: “This site is in a prime location, 200 metres from WestQuay Shopping Centre and The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex and will be a fabulous place to stay for our customers.

“CHG Development Ltd have developed five Travelodge hotels for us across the south of England, and we are delighted to have agreed another deal with them.”

Council leader Royston Smith welcomed the news, saying: “It’s the private sector investing to create more jobs in the city to fill the void created by the public sector, which has got to be a good thing.”

Just what we need another hotel, in light of the Grand De Vere pulling out of the City because it obviously can't make it pay, leaving an eyesore of a glass monster behind.
The Dolphin Hotel around the corner from this proposed site going bust a few years back.

Yes because what we really need on a secondary backstreet is an empty 1950's office building.

Would be stupid to think that Travelodge may have an understanging of their traget market and the towns demograpic and trading patterns.

Im surprised that no one has made the dreaded "ice rink" suggestion yet.

Investment is run down secondary sites to my mind is quite a positive thing.

Regarding the Dolphin Hotel - their only financial difficultly came when the previous owner drew down finance on a proposed sale of part of the car park to build 85 flats that never happened. It is now owned by Mercure who own a further 700 hotels worldwide.

The De Vere will be sold as a going concern.

To fill the void that YOU created, you mean Royston? And that isn't 20 full time, careers- it is 20 minimum wage jobs, most of which will be part time, and probably filled by Polish immigrants if previous experience is anything to go by. I hasten to add, here, that I have nothing against migrant workers and most certainly nothing against Polish hotel staff.

so these are not proper jobs, neither are the jobs that people were moaning about in the new McDonalds to be buit.

So what about the people who work in high street shops, pubs, restaurants, in fact any other service based industry. Are none of these millions of positions "proper jobs".

Perhaps is this the employment heirachy that has existed for the last 100 years.

Either deliberately or obtusely, you are avoiding the point here.

That Grand Harbour hotel would make an ideal ice rink; right next to the swimming facility too. How about the council put in a bid and finally put a smile on some faces.

The DeVere is being sold, as is the Royal Bath in Bournemouth; because the parent company is putting it's money into their 'village' concept - nothing to do with Southampton as such

The SEACITY Museum is what it says it is! It is not a Titanic Museum!
>
Granted the Titanic has a big part to play in the SEACITY museum and has the addition of a Special Titanic Exhibition which runs until 2013.

May I respectfully suggest the citizens of the City of Southampton and surrounding districts read up on their new SEACITY Museum in order to appreciate what a fine addition it is to our glorious City!

Now I know someone is taking the mickey, creating 20 jobs (is a good thing) however it's nowhere the amount of jobs lost in the public sector in Southampton alone, just last night another 200 jobs going as soon as possible.

Maybe Royston misread the figures, 20 is not 200 Roy

In or near the city centre:
.
Grand Harbour,
Hotel Ibis,
Etap,
Novotel,
Tavelodge (Lodge Rd),
Jury's Inn,
Premier Inn,
Dolphin,
Holiday Inn,
Southampton Park Hotel,
Excluding smaller B&B types, of which there are many.
.
Near the M3 we have a Hilton and another Holiday Inn by the M27.
.
Hardly a shortage.
.
Yet again we're told it's the start-ups that will save us and yet again it's the corporations that get the breaks.
.
Yet again we're told the private sector will pick up the pieces from the job cuts and yet again we see a handful of low-paying jobs potentially arise.

I wasn't actually knocking the concept of a new hotel & the jobs it will bring.
I know many of you have posted on Liverpools cruise terminal ambitions.
so you must have read tour companies & cruise ship passengers who wrongly or rightly have said there's not enough hotel accommodation inside the city.
So if these people are right then there is room for one more Hotel.
As for the De Vere's Grand Harbour any one who has worked/stayed or has family working there would know that the De Vere group built a Hotel with a set amount of money which wasn't enough to allow for air conditioning in all the rooms so in the summer it was like an oven in the rooms.
Hopefully the new owners will rectify this

Nice to see an expert commenting on here !! Maybe if you inform Travelodge that they have got it wrong then they might not build it !! How silly of them to want to build a hotel when there is no need -PRATT

Er, someone said there was a shortage, so I illustrated how there isn't one. Does that bother you?

Is the last word of your post your 'signature' or an attempted insult?

If the latter, you could at least spell 'prat' right.

I think you'll find there is a shortage of accommodation, seriously- there may be many hotels but they only have a certain amount of beds. Etap and Ibis are FULL of contractors - if you don't believe me go and have a look I was there recently.... southampton Park does not have much capacity and De Vere is in the Upper Price range. as someone has said, TL wouldn't invest if they thought they wouldn't get the business would they..... it also provides a 'range' of choices. As someone who has had to book accommodation in the city frequently as has one of my colleagues I can tell you now it isn't easy!

However... I don't think its replacement is anything better... there is no style to the proposed building - essentially a box with some pretty lights attached to it.

Can we please attract some decent architects to this city? It desperately needs them! I would love to see some innovatively designed buildings in Southampton!

Mate I liked the spa tavern & the other pub( think it was one of the oldest in the city).
I see the new buildings like the hospital( general) Schools & just feel that we need to save at least one building from each era.
If only to look at it & say never again
