Mum demands answers from health chiefs over 13-year-old's contraceptive implant (From Daily Echo)

To her boyfriend I am sure she is just an object. Girls like that are passed from pillar to post at my son's school - I am not sure what level of protection the implant will provide from STD's? None I suspect.

To the Mother. Have a think why your daughter didn't come to you and talk about it - yet she has spoken to the press! Her morals are largely learnt from her environment (or you).
You might want to sit down and have a good shouty meeting with yourself - then blame others!

I'd suggest this lady have a word with herself first - she clearly doesn't know the kind of lifestyle 'her baby girl' is living.

couldnt agree more with the first two comments, although i have a strong feeling that this woman is on a crusade for some kind of compensation more than anything else....or maybe she cant wait for grandchildren?

She could be the best Parent in the world but we have a generation that do what they want aware that there is little or no consequence, todays teenagers are more advanced physically and mentally than generations before them so we all need to adapt. Prevention is better than cure, too many young women use abortion as birth control...I say lets fit all females with such a device that is not removed until they are 20, in a relationship of more than 24hours and are able to provide for the child, this we do until such times as a similar device os found for men, then we concentrate on educating them on STD's.

This is a sad reflection of modern society where it's perceived as being 'better' that a 13 year old child is protected against pregnancy. Why don't parents/schools and other influential people encourage and empower girls not to give in to the demands of boyfriends instead of accepting it and in the process allowing young men to break the law? There' no virtue in any of this.

to the man who suggests fitting ALL females with a device, how about we put ALL boys in a device to stop them having babies too! ridiculous... I'm betting you wouldn't let your daughter or granddaughter have one! or maybe we should go a bit further with the dog legislation and have all teens microchipped too?

I don't agree with 13 year olds having sex, but the mother has them by the proverbials as they've admitted no clinical trials on under 18s and therein lies the problem. whatever the views on pre-16s having contraceptive advice this is the crux of the matter.

as someone said, you can be the best parent in the world but the internet, peer pressure, TV/media which has sex everywhere has a big part to play!

As for people again judging the mother and daughter - you don't know them and all the details - suggesting that she's on a crusade for compensation is just laughable frankly.....

I'm really saddened by all the posts that are 'anti' young men in relation to this story. These are our sons that we are talking about here - many under pressure from peers and society in general to be sexually active before they feel ready. And as for all the 'prosecute him for rape' comments that have have appeared in these and other columns, has anyone considered that he maybe a 13 year old too? What then? Also, the statutory rape law only comes into play when the child is UNDER 13 - the young woman in this case isn't...

Really? what planet do you live on of course she is after compensation! do read the story! this woman is so contradictory it is laughable!

Before we become Judge and Jury, I'm interested to know about the studies that this contraceptive has on a 13 year old who is going through changes naturally both physically and mentally.

If it is true it has only been tested on over 18's then this opens up a huge problem as a 13 year old is going through changes.

This case could be a massive shake up of UK Law where sex under a certain age is illegal full stop, not this shaky Law of it's ok if a 13 year old consents which I believe stands now. (it does which I was shocked about).

I find it difficult to understand how the mother accepts her own daughter who is a child, was responsible enough to take this precaution of the implant, personally I would be ashamed!

If I were Mom, I'd be dragging her down the local clap clinic! Sorry mom, but you have done something wrong in bringing up your daughter?

If I could make any 'sense' out of what your post says I could answer it but I can't... says it all really.... then again that's a judgement :p

as for someone calling the young girl names, you are the lowest of the low.... that's what I have a problem with, the parent parading this in the press and subjecting her daughter (albeit anonymous) to horrific scrutiny and comments like that. She should have given a lot more thought before wheeling out the press, although the debate needs to be heard, not at the cost of a young girl being vilified!

Whatever anyone thinks of the situation, and my OWN opinion is that I think people aren't quite getting a grip of what the actual issue is - i.e. carrying out a medical procedure for which the parent's permission hasn't been sought (after all we have to sign permission for our kids to have injections in schools and god knows what else) seems ridiculous. I think that advice on contraception is fine but carrying out a procedure where clinical trials haven't been carried out on under 18s is foolhardy. I like to live in the real world and not jump to conclusions about compensation - that is worthy of the average Daily Fail reader that everyone is a scrounger, composeeker or whatever - yawwwwnn.

I too feel really sorry for the young woman. Is it any wonder she didn't feel comfortable talking to her mum about this stuff - when her mum found out she went straight to the press! Her own mother breached her confidentiality - not good. The young woman will be really going through it at school too - she will be getting terrorised by her peers. What a sorry situation

I wouldn't have a problem with it. Over population is the biggest problem we as a nation, indeed the world, face.

Besides, I'm fed up with seeing miserable looking teenage girls pushing buggies around, they are capable of doing so much more with themselves while they are young rather than living a life dependent on benefits & chasing money from absent fathers which ends up costing all of us, it could all be avoided. Surely a little bit of experience of life is handy before taking on the most important responsibility of all - raising decent children.

Yes they are the same age.
Yes they do talk to me and my wife about things like that - odd as it may be I am happily married to the mother of my children!

This girl wants to behave sexually like a grown up. Her mother is apparently happy with that situation - her only grip is the medical procedure. Therefore since she is playing adult she should be allowed to have the contraception?

You seem to be suggesting with the tone some kind of force being applied? "If they (had) done that to one of my girls"... This girl went to them (as she couldn't go to her Mum), had initial councilling and then had it implanted.
The question of whether she, aged 13, should have been able to make that decision alone is a whole different one altogether.
