Call to ban type of hair dye for under-18s

A campaigner is lobbying the EU for a ban on a type of hair dye for under-18s. It comes just months after a Southampton teen was rushed to hospital with her head twice its size after dyeing her hair at home.

Greg Almond is the solicitor running the campaign to get para-phenylenediamine (PPD) banned, a chemical found in hair dye products in chemists and supermarkets across the country.

There is currently no law preventing anyone under 18 buying the products.

Aspiring model Chloe Robins, 14, from Swaythling, was left looking “like the Elephant Man” following a reaction to the hair dye.

As reported in the Daily Echo, she started getting an itchy scalp after using the semi-permanent black dye and less than 48 hours later her head and neck swelled to twice their normal size and she was being violently sick and struggling to breathe.

Mr Almond, said: “The evidence and case studies show that reactions are on the increase and there is no updated research evidence to show that PPD is safe. The European Commission and the UK Parliament need to take action immediately. Urgent questions need to be asked of the European Commission.”

This is the whole reason for the recommended skin patch tests, however I agree (as someone that has been colouring my hair since age 14) that there should be an age limit, as often a child of 14 isn't responsible enough to understand the skin test.

If it's that dangerous, why just ban it for under 18s?

skin /patch test was done and the mother did the test and the hair dye. read the fIrst story on this. Ppd is a highly toxic chemical and the only ones who are making from this is the companies and the Goverment.
huffter Your so right, i asked this the first time it was in papers. there no age limit on having a reaction. A 17 yr old died from this last year and another ended up in a coma, a 36 yr old mother, who had been dying her hair for years. the hair dye companies have been paying cases off to keep it quiet because the amount of money it's worth to the industry. i think it's awful...

Mistyme, I hadn't realised there was a previous story on this so hadn't realised there was a skin test done in this case and I probably spoke too soon.

it's ok yes this happened in oct. it's happening more and more. you only have to google it. it's terrible and many are not even aware of it, untill it's too late. was you aware there is a highly toxic chemical in dark hair dyes ???? it's been banned in many countries, just not ours

Agree, put an over 18 on the products! Maybe then children will be natural whilst going through hormonal issues!

The lawyer Greg Almond that is running this campaign is actually running for the chemical PPD to be banned.
I'm not sure though that putting an 18 on the box will help. There are many teenagers out there who may want to use it even more. If something is restricted from kids, they want it more.
