Shamed Saints fan Andrew Manvell jailed after violence

Shamed Saints fan locked up Shamed Saints fan locked up

A SAINTS supporter involved in a vicious attack on rival fans has been jailed after yet another angry clash.

Andrew Manvell was one of four thugs involved in a savage assault in which Yeovil Town fan Stephen Potter had his head stamped on.

Then, the 47-year-old escaped an immediate spell behind bars, receiving a suspended sentence and a three Football Banning Order.

The ruling meant he was barred from entering the vicinity of Saints’ ground St Mary’s before and after kick-off.

But just months after his court appearance, he flouted the restrictions during an angry confrontation with Bournemouth fans – and now he will spend the next eight months locked up.

According to prosecutor Paul Fairley, Manvell shouted at the opposing fans with his face distorted in rage and showing real anger in his eyes.

Police were escorting Bournemouth “risk” supporters along Above Bar to the railway station on October 2, 2010 when 30 to 40 Saints fans emerged from Palmerston Park.

Manvell wearing a Saints shirt was at the front, shouting and gesturing.

Mr Fairley said: “He was asked to keep back, he refused and an officer had to strike with a baton to make him comply. He was arrested shortly afterwards.”

Manvell, of Spring Close, Southampton, admitted breaching the suspended sentence imposed for the violent disorder.

Judge Peter Ralls QC said he had previously made it “crystal clear” to Manvell he would be jailed if he breached it.

“You were asked to desist and move on but you didn’t. It would make a mockery of court orders if I didn’t activate the suspended sentence.”

The judge however reduced the sentence because the other elements of the order had been fulfilled.

Manvell said he had been drinking heavily outside the zone and entered it to catch a bus home, though he accepted he should not have done so.

In mitigation, David Reid said Manvell was so busy he had taken on a trainee. He said: “He has completed the other requirements of the suspended sentence. He has knuckled down and got on with it. If he goes to prison, his business will fold and the trainee will lose his employment.”

In his previous court appearance, CCTV footage appeared to show Manvell aiming a kick at a fan close to the King Alfred Pub in St Mary’s.

Moments later a second man stamped on Mr Potter’s head as he lay on the ground.

Manvell was one of four sentenced after admitting being part of the violent disorder in 2009, each of them receiving a 45-week suspended jail term.

Do not call this thug a "FAN".
The club should act now and ban this animal from all games - FOR LIFE !!!
We - the real fans - can do without this scum acting out their aggression in the name of Southampton FC.
The club doesn't need it and nor does the game, and at 47 years old - HE AINT GONNA LEARN NOW !!

Nine Toes just highlights what is wrong with this country today! Rather than focussing on as he says it the mindless attitude of some idiot Yeovil fans he is supporting the mindless idiot actions of Manvell! The only way to stamp out this violence is not to support it or get involved in it. If you can't control the minds and actions of others then make **** sure you can control your own!

Not all women, just complete planks like Freemantle girl.

Not once have I condoned the Yeovil incident, just offered up some facts as to what happened just before the video footage.

The person stamping on the Yeovil fans head, is not Andy Manvell.

The person who stamped the Yeovil supporters head, pleaded guilty in court and was not sent to prison either.

That doesn't make either incident right, but Echo should at least use the correct video.

Yes you're right actually OTE it says "In his previous court appearance, CCTV footage appeared to show Manvell aiming a kick at a fan close to the King Alfred Pub in St Mary’s."

and
"Andrew Manvell was one of four thugs involved in a savage assault in which Yeovil Town fan Stephen Potter had his head stamped on."

You get once chance, drinking heavily and mouthing off at fans, being aggressive and spoiling for a fight is bound to be on the road to nowhere. Either way, these thugs should be kicked out of football matches for good. Either they behave themselves and make their way home like most decent fans do, or they get punished.... they are all as culpable for the first and second incidents. If you stand by and cause or watch someone having their head stamped on is thuggery... however many 'excuses' you make for them.....

Not quite sure what points you are trying to argue there. If you think it's acceptable to go into pubs goading the locals and offending members of staff then that's your opinion.

If you don't, then maybe you should have read my first post before jumping down my throat.

@ FMG2,,,,Andy Manvell pleaded guilty to the original offence and to the later offence of violent disorder, therefore he was not tried and convicted.

I was present on the day on the Yeovil game, although I do not agree with all of Nine Toes comments or the way he is attempting glorifying events, Yeovil supporters including the victim were taunting opposing fans in the pub, they offered opposing fans outside for a fight, this incident is not as one sided as it looks.

My comments are in no way intended to defend these people or their behaviour, it just needs to said, it was 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

Anyone who thinks to themselves that stamping on or kicking someone in the head while they are lying on the ground can be justified or mitigated has serious issues with morality, decency & just plain normal standards of behaviour.

To then make your ugly thoughts public by posting them on here & then to continue to try & justify them against others criticism of such a flagrant act of disgusting human cowardly behaviour displays your own shockingly poor grasp of what is & isn't acceptable.

There is NO justification for this behaviour at all.

If you act like a spanner in a pub, people will take exception to it.

The Yeovil fans can have no complaints, they wanted a fight and they got one.
What I said was "attempting to glorifying events" I was giving my opinion on your comments, as it came across to me.

I was also backing what you were saying about their behaviour in the pub.

I agree, however the person stamping on the blokes head is not the person this story is about.

He is the animal that got caught. There are thousands like him at st marys every week. I have twice had the misfortune to be caught-up in the crowd, while walking, and it is both intimidating and disgusting. Swearing, urinating, aggressive chanting are all on show. Women are also present (strangely), and this does not reduce the threats.

We have probably reached the point where football should be played in empty stadiums, while the toothless hordes should be allowed to watch on TV only

Perhaps you should use more care in where you walk in future, I have supported the Saints for over fifty years and seldom have I had any concern, because I go out of my way to avoid trouble, sadly there are a few who don't, and I mean a few.

If you were to break down the statistics I think you will not find any real increase in violence around football, it is mostly isolated and predictable, it is always there and always will be, but that is no reason for the PC brigade to get involved, even the Womans Institute can get rowdy when roused by someone or something they don't like, ask Tony Blair!

To be fair, I don't think our nine-toed chum thinks the head-stamping is a proportional response to mouthing off at someone, just that if one goes around picking fights with the home crowd, you have to expect a violent response. Which is true. Is IS possible to understand why something *has* happened, without thinking it *should have* happened.

For example: we all know the old saying about sticks and stones, but we all also know that screaming racial epithets in the face of Mike Tyson is probably going to elicit some sort of violent response. We are capable of accommodating an idea, without condoning it.

Well, quite. He's just here for a bit of online argy-bargy. I'm just lobbing this in to mess with the hard-of-thinking contingent. A bit like writing "P.T.O" on both sides of a bit of paper and handing it to them, or telling a 50s sci-fi robot "this statement is a lie", it might keep them occupied for a bit.

Knuckle-dragging neanderthals with a Danny Dyer fixation. Pathetic, and a large part of the reason I've never taken my nipper to St Mary's.

Saints need to take some decisive action to rid their club of scum like toastytea and his friends. If they don't, then once they're back in the Premier incidents will receive far more attention, and the club will end up being treated as a disgrace.

Of course, people like toastytea would regard that kind of coverage as a badge of honour, something to be proud of, to distract them from their devastating personal inadequacies and insecurities.
