A CAR has been written off after a collision with a lorry on a major Southampton road.

The Peugeot 307 was struck as the HGV changed lanes after joining the A33 Redbridge Road on the slip road from the Redbridge Roundabout, at the junction with the M271.

The car was spun around and is thought to have hit at least one other vehicle before coming to a halt facing the wrong way, opposite Allington Road.

Emergency services were called to the crash, which happened shortly before 3pm and caused delays for motorists on the M271 and heading into the city from the New Forest, but it is not thought anyone was injured.

The car has since been removed, and police said tailbacks have eased.

Looking at the spelling in the headline, I don't think the car was the only thing involved in an accident!

I hate that part of the road, no-one lets you in and at the same time you see a speed camera so you're also taking your attention off the road by watching your speedometer.

You have to look in your mirrors to find a gap to pull out, watch the cars in front as they often brake hard pannicking they can't find a gap to pull into, AND watch your speed. Too much happening at once for alot of motorists!

I'm surprised they haven't put traffic lights at that entry to match the millions of others throughout the City.

IronLady2010, Agree. The main problem is that the distance between the convergence of lanes when travelling from Redbridge flyover and the divergence of lanes before the Millbrook flyover is far too short in relation to the speed and volume of vehicles, leading them to have little time and space to manoeuvre safely which equates to a high risk of collisions.
Redbridge Road at that point has not been significantly improved for many years , even though it carries a high proportion of motorway bound traffic in and out of the city.

Learn to drive better, and remember its a 50 mph road, and if you can't get into the flyover road use the roundabout.

The car contained snooker Town Championship semi-finalist Billy Castle and his dad Derek. Neither were seriously hurt.
