Police among objectors to McDonald's restaurant and drive-thru at Totton

McDonalds want to develop site of Red Lion pub which was destroyed by fire. McDonalds want to develop site of Red Lion pub which was destroyed by fire.

PLANS for a new McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru in a Hampshire town have sparked more than 70 objections – including one from the police.

Officers have warned that proposals to build a two-storey complex in Commercial Road, Totton, could result in crime, antisocial behaviour and a spate of accidents.

McDonald’s wants to inject new life into the town by redeveloping a site that has stood empty since the Red Lion pub burnt down in 2010. Its plan to build an 85-seat restaurant, with a separate drive-thru facility for people buying takeaways, would create 75 jobs.

But police have objected to the application in a letter to New Forest District Council, which is due to debate the scheme in the next few weeks.

The letter says fast food outlets similar to the one proposed tend to attract troublemakers who often indulge in crime and antisocial behaviour.

Crime prevention advisor Simon Bottom says: “The nearby Millbrook McDonald’s has resulted in 31 police reported incidents in the past 12 months and I would suggest that the situation in Totton would be similar.”

The proposed site is on a sharp bend and is also next to the entrance to Forest Park School. Mr Bottom says: “There will be an undoubted increase in traffic and therefore an increased danger that a driver exiting McDonald’s and turning left would not necessarily see or have time to react to a vehicle turning right from the school at the same time.”

The authority has so far received 74 objections to the scheme – and no letters of support.

Several critics say the area already has too many fast food outlets.

A McDonald’s spokesman said: “We would like to reassure local residents that our main priority is to be a good neighbour.”

If McDonalds would show a bit of community spirit by extending litter collection beyond their own premises and into nearby streets they would win a bit more support. People object to all the discarded wrappers and boxes which attract flies and rats. I know it isn't Mcdonalds that put the rubbish there but they could avoid the association with antisocial behaviour which would be to their benefit.

They could just take their logo off the packaging and no one would ever know. This would also save them money on printing costs. Quick! Suzy! Get me McDonalds on the phone - I've got a killer idea to pitch to them.

If the Police object because "fast food outlets similar to the one proposed tend to attract troublemakers who often indulge in crime and antisocial behaviour", then why do they not object to a lot of other things such as fairs, markets and sports events? They all have the same effect.

If I was in charge of Policing Totton, I would be grateful of anything which would concentrate troublemakers in one spot.

And in response to Simon Bottom's comments about the outlet in Millbrook, I would respectfully suggest that he is talking out of his.

Hummm, what's better, fast 'food' or another pub that will be taken over by undesirables?

As for the Millbrook problems, the same can be said about Hedge-end's McD's, Fareham's 'Collingwood' McD's and the former Black Cat pub in Swathling (now a McD's) as well. Most problems localise to them as meeting places, easier to Police if they're on the ball than dispersed across the county...

Please don't call McD's a 'restaurant' it's a burger bar! Restaurant is insulting to ........ proper restaurants.

Went for a walk in Dibden enclosure this morning and there were McD cartons and boxes in the car park. The nearest McDs open at night is at Ower or Redbridge so Lord help Totton under a pile of packaging

I think it's more they type of people who eat at McD's rather than McD's itself.

I officially will put a letter FOR this to happen!.....I live right next door to this site and see nothing wrong with this. Mcdonalds are always kept clean. they employ people to collect rubbish. Totton is known for antisocial behaviour anyway....cant see a mcd making it any worse!.....lets face it....Whatever they try to put there will be OBJECTED!......looki
ng at wasteland surrounded by high wire fencing is a really appealing site for anyone visiting totton I guess!...75 objection letters...now 1 FOR.....anyone else with me on this?

Yes! When you look at the approach to Totton from the river side it aint too attractive, A couple of smart business like Newmans and the ship engineering place (cant remember its name) We have empty Strides cycles and a scruffy couple of tyre dealers.
At least McDonalds premises are alwys neat and tidy and attractive for what they are which is a fast food outlet.
Totton needs regeneration and this can be the first step in that process as McD attracts footfall and that can only be beneficial.
If this is rejected the centre of Totton will end up like Rumbridge street full of empty shops and no people.

Great yet another mcd's , the one is Asda is a prime example why not to let this happen, will be packed this week with undernourished local kids accompanied by lazy parents giving them their one hot meal of the day. put something decent on there that promotes healthy food, most of the kids have never seen a plate with healthy homecooked food. I see it everyday as I work in Totton.

McDonald's should be paying me haha. I would prefer a burger king to be honest lol. The point is it doesn't matter what they want to put there. It could be a nice harvester. Or even a Toby carvery would be good. But whatever planning permission application gets put in the local totton councillors will object. They object everything. 74 letters of objection so far? The trouble is people only write in if they object. People don't write in if they are FOR and I expect they would get just as many if not more of people started speaking out for both sides!!

I'm getting hungry now so off to mcd for breakfast, shames there's not a drive in in totton haha

............ and why exactly are we paying any attention, at all, to the objections of the Police? The Police service is there to uphold the law......end of.
They are not self appointed adjudicators on planning applications that's for sure.

They should be given a thoroughly good ignoring.......... imo.
