Hampshire police investigate after man found with gunshot wounds in Southampton's Vanguard Road

A MAN is in hospital after being found with gunshot wounds in a Southampton street.

Armed police descended on Vanguard Road last night after reports of a shooting.

Officers have cordoned off several blocks of flats in the area between Vanguard Road, Witts Hill and Lytham Road, including the Alpine News and Food store, in Townhill Park.

A police spokesman said the man had been shot in the Vanguard Road area, but confirmed this afternoon that his injuries were not life threatening.

Chief Inspector Stuart Murray confirmed this afternoon that a 25-year-old man, who was known to the victim but is not from the local area, was arrested in connection with the incident.

He was this evening being held in custody for questioning on suspicion of attempted murder.

Chief Inspector Murray said that the shooting was being treated as an isolated incident and reassured members of the public that there was no risk to the wider community.

He added: “We believe that the incident took place at Vanguard Road, Townhill Park at approximately 7.15pm.

“Although we have not formally spoken to the injured man, the information we have from our initial investigations suggests that the offender was known to him, but is not local to the area.

“The man suffered injuries to the lower part of his body, but is currently being treated for those injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

“We would like to reassure members of the public that we are doing everything we possibly can to recover the firearm and remove it from the streets.”

Here is a helping hand.....A 25-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent after reports of one shooting in the Vanguard Road area of Bitterne on Sunday night (February 19). He remains in police custody for questioning by detectives. Road closures and diversions are due to remain in place overnight. Officers are carrying out enquiries related to this case at a Tesco store in the community, but there has not been a second shooting. There is no evidence to suggest a wider risk to public safety. Police would like to thank the public again for their co-operation so far tonight....

Original, scant, reporting by the Echo has since been updated tp provide a more-comprehensive account of the incident and police response.

Why was the original offering by the Echo so limited and uninformative?

Was the revised reporting a direct response to the much better information provided by the poster who, at the time, had greater factual information at their fingertips? Just asking.

That end of Vanguard Road has in the past hit the headlines, if I remember.
17 August 2011 armed hold-up at shop.
22 August 2011 serious stabbing.
Victim drove himself in black Peugeot to KFC Portswood Road, transferred to hospital.

I assume his injuries are not life threatening otherwise this bloke would have been arrested for attempted murder.

So why was he shot? I'll start the ball rolling with...... drugs, a classic!

Although the Echo 'do' sometimes get things wrong (as do the nationals!) - one assumes that they aren't paying reporters to be there all hours of the day, so one or two do the 'graveyard' shift!

But it does make me giggle slightly that those who are most prolific in slagging them off are the most frequent posters on here..... if you hate their reporting so much, why do you keep coming back? (just saying)

I hope the person who was shot makes a swift recovery, whatever the circumstances!

Considering that Soton police have a facebook group and Twitter account and actively keep the public updated using social networking, of course it was on facebook first. The only the Echo could have reported it first is if they were clairvoyant. Some people really will complain about anything.

It may surprise you, but it takes time to put a report together. Hampshire Constabulary posted a message on Facebook at 22.41 - 90 minutes before this report was published online.

They did not choose to contact the media through the normal channels and then once we have heard about it, various things need to be done before anything is published.

Feel free to criticise, but bearing in mind other local media have still yet to report anything about this incident, I think getting a report online shortly after midnight is actually quite good.

Think this reports everything I need to know, somebody was shot.
.
This city is getting worse by the day.
.
When are we going to get rid of this scum from the streets?
.
I don’t wish anybody involved in crime a speedy recovery that is for sure. Talking about people being shot, when are we going to deport that Zimbabwean boxer that apparently represents Britain by going to Munich and then threatening another man that he is going to have him shot? Anybody that glorifies gang violence or gun crime should be suitably punished.
