JUST over a year after becoming the first man to row around the world on a static rowing machine, Bas-ingstoke’s intrepid Dave Holby has begun his latest amazing charity feat.

The 31-year-old, of Long Copse Close, Chineham, has vowed to run 1,000 miles in 2012, which works out at an average of three miles a day. He will once again be raising money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Dave became a local celebrity after spending two-and-a-half years on a static rowing machine at The Malls shopping centre, completing the phenomenal 40,000 km feat in December 2010, and raising £20,000 in the process.

Dave, who works for employment services company Procius, based in Basing View, has vowed to sign up to a number of long distance runs, including the second Destination Basingstoke Shire Half-Marathon, while keeping on track by running home from work every day.

He told The Gazette: “I have always been a useless runner but I really enjoy it so it is wonderful to be able to do something like this for charity.

“I am really looking forward to taking part in a lot of running events and hopefully raising a lot of money as well.”

He added: “I walk into work every day and take my running kit with me.

“The run home to Chineham is about two miles so I do an extra couple of laps to make sure I am doing enough. It is really good fun.”

Dave will be using a tracking device to ensure that every mile he runs is logged and recorded.

Speaking about the good cause he is supporting, he said: “It is such an amazing charity. People were so generous with the row and I hope they can dig deep again for the cause.”
