Southampton's hopes of promotion to the Premier League tonight hang in the balance.

It comes after Nigel Adkin's side lost to Middlesbrough.

More than 3,000 Saints fans had travelled to the Riverside in the hope that a Southampton win would see them promoted to the Premier League.

But despite going ahead through Billy Sharp Saints went down 2-1.

It now means that Saints have to beat Coventry at St Marys next weekend or hope rivals West Ham drop points to secure promotion.

Tonight's result does mean that Saints cannot win the Championship with second best they can hope for.
