A WOMAN and her 19-month- old daughter were last night in hospital after violence erupted at a Hampshire home, ending in a man being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The 27-year-old woman was left with multiple “serious injuries” after a row in a flat in Eastleigh in the early hours of yesterday.

A 45-year-old man, who was also taken to hospital, was arrested by police.

Specialist forensic officers spent yesterday thoroughly examining the property in Alexander Square, off Twyford Road, which was sealed off as a crime scene.

Detectives meanwhile conducted door-to-door inquiries in the five-storey block of flats, which backs onto the mainline railway tracks running between Southampton and London.

Police were called to reports of a domestic dispute at the flat shortly after midnight. The injured woman and her young child, who was not hurt, were taken to safety.

The woman was last night in a “stable” condition in hospital, where staff were said to be observing the toddler.

The arrested man was last night being held in custody.

Stunned residents at Alexander Square yesterday told the Daily Echo they could not believe what had happened.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “I don’t know the woman well but I’ve seen her around here a few times and she seems like a lovely girl.

“I just hope her and her daughter are on the mend and get back home safe and sound soon.”

Another Alexander Square resident added: “I spoke to one of my neighbours this morning and he said he heard it kicking off last night.

“We were woken up by the sirens but we didn’t really know what was going on at the time.

“You just don’t expect something like this to happen on your doorstep. Everyone around here seems a bit shocked by the whole thing.”

Detective Inspector Charlie Rimmer, leading the investigation, codenamed Operation Belvedere, said yesterday: “We had a large team of officers dedicated to this throughout the night and will continue today, with officers in the area today focused on establishing exactly what happened.

“If you witnessed this incident and if you are yet to speak to police, please stop an officer if you see them and talk to them, or call us on 101, quoting Operation Belvedere.”
