CLUBBERS were showered with boiling water after a radiator was knocked off a wall.

Customers were evacuated from Club 4 after the incident, in which several people were scalded.

Paramedics were called to the South Western House venue in Southampton, formerly known as Dock Gate 4 and now part of Grand Cafe, to treat casualties.

It is understood a couple were having a row which resulted in a man running into and apparently dislodging a radiator from the wall near to the toilets in the Piano Bar area. It sent scalding hot water spraying both from the radiator and the fixtures on the wall.

Clubbers spoke of having to “run for it” through a cloud of hot steam. A 39-year-old was left with burns to her face after she was caught with a blast of hot water spraying from the ceiling.

The officer worker from Southampton said: “It was quite scary.

We really didn’t know what was going on. I was in the toilet with my friend and the alarm went off and when someone opened the door we saw what we thought was smoke.

Then we saw the radiator on the floor and the water spraying everywhere. People were just having to run for it to get out from the toilets.

“As I turned to check my friend was behind me I got hit in the face with the water, which really stung and it did blister up a bit the next day.”

Another woman, who was out celebrating her 39th birthday, added: “I was frightened to go through. I bent down as low as I could but I could feel the hot water tipping all over me. Luckily I still had my coat on as I had only been in there about 20 minutes but it was frightening.”

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed it was called at 12.50am on Sunday and treated at least one other casualty, a 25-year-old woman, for scalds to her face and eyes.

A spokesman for the Grand Cafe venue said the company was deeply sorry that people had been hurt in the incident.

He said: “This was an accident that those involved are deeply sorry about. We regret if anyone was hurt as a result, but it was something that was beyond our control.

“Our business is to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time and we pride ourselves on that. We passed our latest assessment by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service only two weeks ago with flying colours. We are fully confident in our evacuation procedure and we handled it in accordance with that.”
