A FOOTBRIDGE over the M271 which became a magnet for vandals is to be closed for a year.

Southampton's transport bosses have given the go-ahead to temporarily close the bridge near the Redbridge roundabout at a cost of £5,000 for a year's trial period to help cut down vandalism.

Members of the ruling Liberal Democrat Cabinet made the "gating order" for the bridge to be closed at a meeting last night - in spite of some objections from local residents who claimed it would be inconvenient.

They will review the position after a year to see what affect it has had on vandalism problems which have plagued the bridge and neighbouring roads.

The order was made following a two-month consultation exercise by the council which made the order under tough government powers to clamp down on anti-social behaviour.

Vandalism Vandals have been using the bridge as a thoroughfare to commit acts of vandalism in Gover Road and Coniston Road.

There have also been reports of people throwing objects from the footbridge on to drivers travelling along the M271.

Yobs are also thought to be responsible for 35 grass fires on a nearby field during the past five years.

City council Cabinet member for communities and regeneration Councillor Liz Mizon assured members that the closure was temporary and would be reviewed in a year to see whether it had had any affect on the vandalism problem.

She said: "This is, in a sense, an experiment. It is to be very closely monitored to make sure that it is making a difference."
