LAST month Liberal Democrat letter writer Richard Grant fantasised about a Liberal Democrat Prime Minister.

Shortly after, the Liberals suffered another election wipeout across the country – so much so that in one contest their candidate couldn’t even beat Professor Pongo, a man dressed as a penguin!

After that, you would have thought a bit of humility, or the eating of humble pie, would be the order of the day for Mr Grant. Instead he has the nerve (letters, May 15) to claim that his party is closest to the thinking of the majority of people, in spite of what happened on election night.

I feel sure that most people will not agree with him when he advocates giving away further billions of pounds to the wrecked system of the eurozone as part of the Liberals’ longheld wish to abolish nation states in favour of a country called Europe.

Our MP here in Totton, Dr Julian Lewis, is one of 82 Conservatives who voted in Parliament for an EU referendum on continued membership of the EU. He is also one of 68 MPs who have signed the People’s Pledge (peoplespledge.org) which has the same objective, this showing he is far more in touch with public opinion than Mr Grant and what is left of his holed-out party.

Finally, which is more important – loyalty to party or loyalty to principle – especially in a coalition Government which David Cameron says he would rather not be a part of ?
