    What about southampton999s claim about 150kph on the autobahn, If you have a blow out traveling at this speed you are more likely to die than traveling at say 70mph where it may be more controlable. In this instance it would be the speed you were traveling at that killed you not the blow out.
    Hi Saint Robbie, I couldn't agree more with slowing down in built up areas. My pint is that 7% of accidents are attributable to speed, the other 93% are attributable to another factor, be it inatention or simple 'bad driving skills'. The whole problem with a lot of drivers is that they feel that they have a 'god given' right to a driving licence. When quite clearly they are not up to it. You will notice that on a motorway at 2 oclock in the afternoon say you will find that drivers drive faster more safely. This is because these drivers tend to be people who drive alot and like anything in life the more you do it the better you get. Compare this to a sunday when the 'sunday drivers' are out there are slower speeds but poor lane discipline, bad driving etc causes more accidents. And on the Autobahn (at least the 30% that is not restricted) 150kph is slow, thats on 90 mph. How many people have blow outs now?? Very few as the only reasons for a blow outs are under/over inflated tyres, badly worn tyres or damaged tyres and if you get into a car with any of these then you are a danger to yourself and others and that comes under 'bad driving'! I personally think that the limit in towns should be 20mph and 100 mph on the motorway with lower limits in the wet or bad visibility. That would cut road deaths.
    One contributer to accidents is not enough speed, when on main roads I often come accross people travelling at 30 to 35mph on a 60mph road, if safe I will over-take however I do frequently have these selfish idiots speed-up and put me in danger but because I am over-taking I am seen as the dangerous driver not them, I have often said and do travel at 20mph in built up areas but not trunk roads. My sympathies to those who knew this lady"

A Southampton man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a head-on crash in the New Forest.

A 61-year-old woman driving a Vauxhall Astra was killed when her vehicle was in collision with a Vauxhall Insignia on the A35 at Holmsley yesterday.

The woman, who came from Christchurch, Dorset, died at the scene. Her passenger, a 39-year-old woman from Lee-on-the-Solent, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The Insignia was being driven by a 52-year-old Southampton man who also suffered minor injuries but was taken to Southampton General Hospital as a precaution.

Today police revealed that he had been arrested in connection with the crash, which occurred at the junction of the A35 and the B3058 Holmsley Road.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the collision. They are particularly keen to hear from the driver of a blue Volvo estate that was travelling along the A35 at Holmsley when the crash happened just before 10am.
