A child has died and rescue workers were battling to save a victim trapped after a massive explosion tore through a house.

A third person was unaccounted for and a fourth, a man, suffered severe burns in the incident, which is thought to have been caused by a gas leak.

The property in Shaw, Oldham, was destroyed and a number of other properties wrecked in the blast which happened around 11.15am today.

Superintendent Neil Evans of Greater Manchester Police told reporters at the scene that rescuers could see one person in the rubble.

He said: ''One individual we can see, we are trying to remove debris to get that person out.''

He added: ''This is an ongoing search and rescue effort and we are offering our full support to the fire and other emergency services.

''Our main and immediate focus right now is to assist in ensuring those injured in the explosion get any medical assistance that they need.''

Mr Evans said gas was ''one element'' the investigation will focus on.

The explosion reduced three terrace houses to rubble.

According to locals, the man seriously injured is named Anthony Williamson and lives at one of the rented properties with his partner, mother-of-six Tanya Williamson.

Hammad Iltaf, whose father is the couple's landlord, said Mr Williamson was at the property with the couple's youngest child.

Not really local news, is it?

Gas explosion, I have seen this in the news in the past and in those incidences the cause was metal theft, so this could be a manslaughter charge. Personally I would charge them with murder if this is also to be the result of metal theft.

Jeez, a poor child has died and someone else is trapped. Let's allow the incident to be looked at before deciding who's at fault or what the cause is.

there has been an incident, and we have been allowed to comment on it. Fortunetely for me I am not emotionally attached to the event therefore I have given my opinion on the matter. If you disagree then dont add to the comments and move on, but dont criticise other people for expressing their opinions on what is after all, a news forum.

This is the second incident of this type within twelve months..check the landlords name..same as all the others around here..now check the gas safety certificate..and see if things have been 'changed' since it was completed ??!!.
Sad that a child had to die this time..maybe things will change.
