SCORES of Saints fans were queuing in the city's WestQuay shopping centre today to be among the first to get their hands on the team's new shirt.

The kit, launched as the club prepares for the new season in the Premier League, went on sale at 11am.

Staff have been forced to seperate the eager fans into several different queues as they get people in and out of the store.

Have you got your hands on the new shirt yet? What do you think of it? Tell us your thoughts below.

Born and bread in Southampton and live in Fawley.

So saying the shirt is more expensive than a Man United shirt, means i must be a Pompey supporter :o/

Some months ago, I got verbally abused here for condemning the financial exploitation of football fans. But as we move away from the euphoria of getting into the premier league, the harsh reality of meeting the cost of being a fan is beginning to kick in, as evidenced by some of the less than excited comments above.

Dusty says...
2:43pm Sun 1 Jul 12

Apparently,Saints charge their staff around £17 a week to park their cars, but players and wags can park for free. So the ones earning 1000s a week don't pay, those earning 100s do :o/

If they can apply that to staff, what makes fans think that they will not be fleeced any which way saints can.

Feel free to correct any grammatical or spelling errors.

The demise of the beloved stripes is a disapointment but I will be getting one. As I would whatever it was. (unless we completely changed colours as Cardiff). Guess I'm the sort of fan(mug?) that clubs like! Judging by the queues I'm not the only one!
It has screwed our "friends" along the M27 though. It'll take them all season to think of replacement feo their "witty" deckchairs!
Still you shouldn't spend years wishing for a return to the Prem then moan about the costs involved when we get there.

The new Adult Saints shirt purchased from St Marys or West Quay is £47 , the new Utd shirt purchased from Old Trafford is £50. Please tell me how 47 is higher than 50 ?

Dusty says...
2:59pm Sun 1 Jul 12

You are using one retailer. A Manchester United fan can go to Sports Direct and purchase a new shirt for £43.

Now you tell me where you can buy a Southampton shirt from another retailer? You don't need to pay £50, as you have a choice of retailers. So where is the choice for Southampton fans?

Brite Spark says...
3:04pm Sun 1 Jul 12

It's a bit Switzerland .... home and away kits. Not an entirely bad thing is it, considering ......?

stjamie says...
3:06pm Sun 1 Jul 12

The choice is to buy one or not. The 43 quid at Sports Direct is set by the store, nothing to do with Uniteds generosity or looking after their fans. The truth of the matter is that United have to make their shirts available to millions around the world . Whereas I would guess that 99% of Saints shirts are purchased by people from the area. There is not the need to put the shirts out in other shops.

Dusty says...
3:14pm Sun 1 Jul 12

Well of course its set by the store :o/

Fact is because their is a choice of retailers, that's what drives prices down its called competition. Southampton have a fan base world wide, Even Malta has a fan club.

Thing that Southampton do wrong is rip of its fans (all club's do) by controlling the merchandise. If they sold to retailers world wide they would sell more shirts, making competition and savings for the fan. Instead of this cartel of keeping prices high

So you are arguing with me, because? You think the price should be high and no matter how clear it is that Southampton fans are paying to much and have no choice of retailers, you are all for that? Because Southampton FC, can do no wrong.

stjamie says...
3:21pm Sun 1 Jul 12

I am in no way arguing with you, the fact is if you go to both teams grounds in order to buy a shirt you pay 3 pound more at United. Is their the necessity for Saints to sell shirts in Sports Direct in Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester etc ? No, I would suggest. In the same way as there are not rails and rails of Wigan, Sunderland, Reading or Fulham shirts in the Southampton store. The bigger teams with larger support need to farm their stuff out, the smaller ones don't.

Dusty says...
3:25pm Sun 1 Jul 12

>>>> Is their the necessity for Saints to sell shirts in Sports Direct in Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester etc ?

Let the retailer decide that, the retailer with the choce of buying the kit.

>>>The bigger teams with larger support need to farm their stuff out, the smaller ones don't.

If Southampton have ambitions of Being a force in the premiership, then they better start thinking like a big club. Maybe the lack of retailers world wide and in the UK, is one of the reasons Southampton are such Minos.

stjamie says...
3:33pm Sun 1 Jul 12

Yeah , you're spot on. The lack of available Saints shirts in Kenya and Malta is why we didn't win last seasons Champion's League.

Do you honestly think that the powers that be at Saints have not looked at or discussed putting the merchandise out in other stores? Of course they have and I suggest if the need was there and/or if it would make money it would have been done.

Dusty says...
3:45pm Sun 1 Jul 12

Thanks for the spelling correction, I don't know what i would do with out you guys.

Yes of course they discussed it and it is cheaper at the moment, to keep overheads down by making the kit an exclusive Southampton thing, where it can be purchased online if anyone abroad or the UK wants it and maintaining the cartel on the product, thus keeping the price over inflated. Yes they thought about it really hard.

Until the kit is widely seen in shops, Southampton will always be a Minnow team (thanks again stjamie;o)

I mean, clubs never make wrong decisions financially and never go bankrupt. Because they always think of everything ;o)

I am enjoying this, a debate and spelling lessons at the same time, its great.

anderoo says...
3:48pm Sun 1 Jul 12

By paying my £42 for a Saints home shirt at the Saints shop, at least i know any profits are going to the club and not if sold in Sports Direct, into the pocket of a certain Michael Ashley, for him to finance his own club.
And yes i do have the price correct.....£42 for the short sleeved version and £47 for the long sleeved.
And to those moaning that its an all red shirt......we have worn them before.....back in the 80's when Draper was the club sponsor.

No not you.

It seems football fans are still being viewed by some as brainwashed fools incapable of making their own decisions.

It's quite simple really, if you like the kit and have the spare cash then buy it. If you don't like it or can't afford it then don't buy it.

Laughing at the skunts is always relevant. If Hampshire was a medieval court then Saints would be king and Pompey would be the jester. It's become the sole purpose of their existence.
So Pompey had a say in the Saints T-Shirts?

I think it was Oscar Wilde who said there is nothing so hilarious as the English middle class taking the moral high ground over the lower orders. If you don't follow football you'll have no idea why we dislike the blue few as we do. For me, it's the way they booed through the minute's silence of Ted Bates (google him).

But the thing is Pompey will be alright. It's actually impossible to destroy them. So laughing at their current misfortunes isn't thuggish or twisted - it's what rivals do. If roles were reversed I wouldn't want their sympathy.

I am in no way arguing with you, the fact is if you go to both teams grounds in order to buy a shirt you pay 3 pound more at United. In the same way as there are not rails and rails of Wigan, Sunderland, Reading or Fulham shirts in the Southampton store. The bigger teams with larger support need to farm their stuff out, the smaller ones don't.
You seem to have forgotten that Man U players are on £40K-£250k a-week!! £3 difference is not a lot especially when our players are at the most on £30k a week.

As fans we get ripped off and as people in general we get ripped off everyday. Trouble is most of us are so into this Saints brand we just take it and pay ridiculous prices.

The club (and others) know we're fcuked as a country financially but they still keep prices up. Why? Because they don't really care about us, they just care about the money.

I don't care if the team played in red with white dots, it how we play, who we beat and consolidation our Premiership position next that really matter.

The price is the price, like it or lump, it's fans choice to purchase or not.

As for not selling in Sports Direct, totally agree, why should Saints make Newcastle's owner more money to buy players, for those fans from across the world (Malta Indonesia and alike) shirts can be purchased from the clubs website, profits going to Saints, not that fat Cockney spiv Ashley.

Yes, it is going to take a while getting used to the new kit. There are already 2 teams, Stoke and Sunderland in the prem wearing the stripes so this does make us different. I personally prefer the away kit. I see fans wearing their favourite Saints shirts to matches from years ago and they do so with pride. To all the traditionalists as you like to be called harping on about your red n white stripes, do one and get over it. This is one of the best kits Saints have had in a long time. If you have a look here; http://www.historica lkits.co.uk/Southamp ton/Southampton.htm, you will see that all the best kits have been the ones that arent the red n white deckchair stripes. Maybe next kit could be more like the fantastic rank Xerox kit.
I found this site the other day and my thoughts were exactly the same, that some of our best kits dont include the traditional red and white stripes.
As a child and when i first started supporting saints we wore the Air Florida/Rank Xerox strip which just had a white patch in the middle, then it was the all red with white and black trim kit sponsored by Draper Tools, Next up was the half red and half red and white pin stripes as worn my denmark.
Point being, the first 8 years(1980 - 1988) of me experiencing being a saints fan, ther were no traditional red and white stripes.

My next point is that those looking for tradition should be aware that the first saints kits were actually - the sash then red and white checks and the next version was half red half white.
From 1885 to 1947 we also wore blue shorts.

Yes we have worn various version of red and white stripes for long periods of time (the worst being the Nike style tick on the Pony kit) but i agree with brusher mills all the best ones arent stripes.

Finally Liverpool have worn an all red kit with white pin stripes for 3 years out of 120 so how can you all keep harping on about liverpool, No one was on here last year saying the new kit looks like Stoke, Sheff Utd, Sunderland, Brentfords etc

Well i for one am pleased that our current owners in their time have mixed things up a bit and i will certainly be buying me and my two sons one in time for the first home game to wigan.

This is true. It's worth remembering that Liverpool didn't wear all red until Bill Shankly came along and changed things in the 60s so as to make them look more imposing on the pitch. They did alright, to be fair.

Alicesdad says...
10:20am Mon 2 Jul 12

Stop getting wound up people. The kit looks fine to me. The comments about the alternative designs over the years are all valid. It's a personal taste thing

It is important to remember that the club has new owners who want this club to have a professional looking kit. This kit undoubtedly meets that requirement.

No ! It doesn't have stripes. Neither did the kit that we wore when we left league 1. And we all know that at some time the stripes will return from time to time. Its big business to change the strip every season, and the stripes option will inevitably return one day.

Peoples memories always heavily influence their perspective on these things. This is a new generation, we are effectively a new club, a new organisation with new owners, new management, new everything. But still with the people who count, the fans. They are the one thing that won't change.

Supprt the club, embrace change, get used to success, because there's a truckload of success coming our way. So get used to it.

If it is available in a fleece option then it will also go on Alicescats Christmas list. He does love his fleece !

I love the new kit. I cant believe all those complaining ...

Actually if you look back through the years there have been all sorts of variations ... fat stripes, thin stripes, shoulder stripes, panels rather than stripes, diagonal stripes and so on. Fasion changes, life moves on .. progress. The club is progressing (we dont want it to stand still do we?). Whats all this "tradition nonsense" you'd think we had changed our colours to blue, relocated the stadium and decided that "the long ball" was the way forward.

Southampton is still our club, they still play in Southampton, the fans are the same fans, we still try to play good football, we still play in red and white.

I think we should be focussing on the positive progress the club has made, be supporting our team, and wearing the shirt with pride.

I think it's time to bring the badge into the 21st century, they ran a competition in the 70s and came up with the badge we have now, it has changed slighty over the years though but i think it would be a great idea to do it again and give the new generation of fans a chance to be a part of the new and hopefully successful era of the club,

We dont have to stray away from the design we have now but a stylish new re-vamp would be great i think. And maybe get fans feeling apart of the club again instead feeling like all they see them as is pound signs.

Most of the sensible people who post here, who happen to loathe the moronic remarks of Little Hitler, will love it !

It wouldn't have mattered who said it, just as long as something like it was said by someone.

I realise that Hitler and Battersea Bill are just the usual trolls with different IDs. I'll not waste time laboriously hammering you with my superior intellect and fiendish wit.

Any reply you make to this will just prove you are sitting at home waiting to see what effect your comments have had. You might feel compelled to say something insulting in some lame attempt to save face in front of the other posters, but I won't bother to come back and look !

Let the retailer decide that, the retailer with the choce of buying the kit.

If Southampton have ambitions of Being a force in the premiership, then they better start thinking like a big club. Maybe the lack of retailers world wide and in the UK, is one of the reasons Southampton are such Minos.

Personally I think the strip will be fine and people need to stop getting their knickers in a twist about it. Football strips change soo often it will be different before this thread has reached its conclusion. I don't remember people moaning that much when our away kit was black not long ago. Or when it was all white back in the early nineties. Things change. And then they change again. and again. So soon we'll be playing in plain stripes again and still people will moan about something.

You do have a point (so worth being born) -when was the last time we changed the colour of our shorts? This is quite a radical change overall this time, and warrants a bit of fuss.
Someone surely has an agenda for this all-red strip.
