Oaklands pool facing axe in new council cuts plan

Pool could close and jobs axed in new council cuts Pool could close and jobs axed in new council cuts

COUNCIL bosses will today announce job losses and the closure of a much-loved council swimming pool in Southampton as they unveil a “mini-budget” setting out new spending plans for the city.

Staff were due to be told this morning that Oaklands Swimming Pool in Lordshill has no future – putting dozens of jobs at risk.

The Daily Echo understands Labour leaders have decided to close the pool, a centre of excellence for swimming, so they can use a £230,000-a-year subsidy to fund other initiatives.

It will mean swimmers having to travel to the Quays in the city centre or the private pool in Shirley, or pay more to join the private David Lloyd Fitness Centre in Nursling.

Labour, which seized power in a local election landslide in May, will unveil its new spending priorities for the city later today as it begins to tackle an estimated £46m budget deficit over the next two years to meet Government funding cuts.

Opposition Tory leisure spokesman, Councillor John Hannides, said: “Oaklands has served the community very well over the years and has become a much-valued community pool. To close it flies in the face of everything we should be doing in this Olympic year to encourage participation in swimming as a healthy activity.

“It’s a decision that’s been taken without proper consideration.”

The pool has been closed since May after a leak was found.

A survey found the pool was structurally sound but needed repairs to the learner pool area.

The council said on its website last week that it was “working hard to ensure that Oaklands Pool reopens as soon as possible”.

The pool has become a political football in recent years, with Labour previously proposing large funding cuts while accusing the Tories of wanting to close it.

Conservatives pledged in their latest election manifesto to keep all the city’s pools and leisure centres open. They said they planned to work with developers and town planners to provide a new Oaklands Swimming Pool as part of the redevelopment of Lordshill district centre.

Labour made no mention of it.

Two years ago Tories handed over the management of the majority of council leisure facilities to a private operator to save the authority about £8m a year and bring new investment into the venues.

Oaklands pool was not part of the deal.

Labour’s council leisure boss Warwick Payne said: “If we do have to go ahead with the closure of Oaklands Pool it would be with an exceptionally heavy heart in my case. I am a former pupil of Oaklands Community School and have probably swum more lengths in that pool than any other and I have a lot of happy memories of it.

“No definite decision has been made yet on its future but we have to be mindful of the fact that the Tories have left us with a council with very little money left over and a swimming pool that lacks investment for many years and is now costing the taxpayers of Southampton around a quarter of a million pounds each year to keep open.”

Labour couldn't run a bath, no wonder they're having trouble with the swimming pool.

I bet they want to close it so they can bulldoze the whole site when Oasis Lord's Hill move out into their new building. £££££££££..

An underused and over subsidised pool, with alternatives (Shirley & Quays) on a number of bus routes.
.
Not a priority in these times of austerity.
.
Probably be cheaper to pay for a a taxi for the handful of users each day to take them to Shirley Pool.
.
But don't let simple economics and common sense get in the way of it being used as a political football.
.
Focus on the if issues.

Costing a quarter of a million pounds a year to keep open, and other pools nearby it really has to close, despite people's memories! You get to keep the memories but not the pool.

When my children were younger this was a very popular venue and a very busy pool. There have been rumours for years about closure. Due to the school being re-located I have no doubt at all that shutting the pool is essential to enable the whole site to be razed for building houses(and where will those children go to school since the new school is so small?). IMO the Council will have looked only at the best way to close the pool and not the possibility of it staying open.

Didn't Williams say there would be no job cuts?
I remember Don Thomas writing in this paper warning about the plans of the tories to close this pool funny it's his party who are doing it?
As for not being popular I wonder if all the families who's children use it had known Labour would do this if they'd taken or indeed won any seats in this area?
Watch out refuse workers as you see another Williams lie are you next?

I thought Labour were against any cuts, didn't they say that to win the election?
I believe the council " books" are open to all, so if Labour had checked they would have know the financial position, if they claim not to know the financial position it shows they did not do their home work.
Tories are the party for the workers, Labour are the party for the few( example two new cabinet positions extra £22,000, no allowance cuts unlike Tories and Liberals ). Sack the workers, reward the Labour councillors more.Labour hope the public won't notice, they are a disgrace.

So why did the Tories remove the funding for free swimming for the over 60's?
I would love to resume my swimming but cannot afford to.

I agree that the books are open for all to look at and the resignation of Cllr Morrell did smack of cowardice. The fact was that a trained accountant had not studied the books before taking a cabinet job shows how inadequate he must be at totting up numbers. I hate to think what his private clients are pondering while he pores over their books.

The Tories might be being honest in that they are slashing everything and telling the public just that, but they are the party that support the capitilist doctrine and are happy for their to be a large rich and poor divide. If Labour thought a bit before putting out their press statements and only publicising reality then they could perhaps be trusted a little more. Radio Solent apparently has said the pool is going to close.

A shame, perhaps Private Enterprise could take it over and run it, but users will have to pay the appropriate price for using it, could it ever make a profit in these circumstances? I doubt it.

@Yellowcard, really?
How exactly are Labour responsible for the deepening of global capitalism over the last 30 years resulting in a contraction in economies that are based on services and financial fraud? In my mind when Labour tried to stop greed being the defining virtue of the modern man with a high tax rate, they lost elections.... Did Labour invent fractional reserve banking? Did Labour create the environment for private banks to create money? You are ill informed and merely repeating a common misinterpretation of events of the last 30 years. May i suggest you read a brief history of neo-liberalism by D Harvey to gain a better understanding of global and domestic socio-economic-polit

Another alternative is Red Lodge Pool in the Sports Centre, which is what I use.

It's run by the community and has charitable status. Maybe a similar model could work for other pools in the city?

Your right, they were not responsible. History however shows that when it comes to the economy they couldn't run a bun fight in a bakery.

My son does lessons at this pool. Also his and many schools take classes over there for lessons (as per curriculum) - what are they gonna do if it closes - curriculum not gonna br met!
A couple of weeks ago, I was contacted to see if I wanted a refund for cancelled lessons (due to maintenance) or to carry money over to sept.
Looks like I'm going to have to request a refund now - my children are going to be very disappointed as they either have lessons or use the pool during the hols!
Some of the repairs have been made - what a waste of money if after that you're gonna close it!!!

When the Tories privatised many sports & recreation facilities like Bitterne the Labour party went mad about it now we know why.
they don't give a **** about your kids.
they have promised to restore wages?
most won't see a marked improvement in pay when they'll be paying more tax & NI stamp only the people on £30,000+ will notice a big increase at the expense of the kids.
The Tories were trying to get cheap swimming from David LLoyds for the people of the Lordshill area if they couldn't incorporate a pool in the new Oasis academy.
Labour got your votes & are showing you all exactly what that means.
On ITV tonight the councillor responsible for this department came on acting really smug & said there will be more losses to services the same services the4y accused the Tories of wanting to scrap.
Williams refused to go on as I guess Fred dinages daughter is a Tory MP.
Watch this space fortnightly bin collections no jobs internally in eight months no work. on the dole.
so next year the council staff get their pay back maybe but how many will be left to get it ?
this councillor said the Unions had agreed to these measures & were happy about it?
so why were they so Anti Tory? more jobs more services but they fought to oust the tory council? the truth is now happening will we still vote for Labour ( you) ?

Why don't you just admit Labour lied through their teeth to get elected?
I can't believe you feel it's better for 1,500 job losses yes losses as I can't see that many leaving can you?
Rather than the higher paid taking a 5.5% pay cut exactly what the Tory & Liberal councillors took & the only party to refuse was Labour.

I'm sorry most of you haven't got a clue, politics aside this pool is a dump, 25years and it's never been updated, I live right next to it and if I ever want to use a public pool I will go to the Quays or to Romsey Rapids. i also enrolled my youngest in. This isn't about politics some swimming lessons and was shocked at how poor they were, he now goes to Rapids and has learnt more in three months than the previous year. This isn't about politics it's about not spending £230k on a pool that's beyond reasonable repair and isn't supported by the local community. As for the schools that use it KES can afford to go elsewhere, the others could use Shirley as well as various other pools in private gyms etc. And is there no new pool on the new school site on 5 acres??
