100,000 to see Olympic torch in Hampshire
IT’S almost here - the Olympic torch relay will roll into the New Forest, the Isle of Wight and Southampton tomorrow, on day 57 of its mammoth journey around the UK.
More than 100,000 people are expected to line the streets around Hampshire and the Island to see it, and civic chiefs are urging residents to pick their spot and arrive at least an hour early to avoid missing out.
Following its tour of Kings Worthy and Winchester on Wednesday, the Olympic flame will return to Hampshire at 10.10am tomorrow for a visit to Lyndhurst.
It will reach Brockenhurst by 10.25am, where it will visit Brockenhurst College, before travelling to Lymington ahead of a 45-minute tour of the town.
The flame will then travel by ferry to the Isle of Wight before returning to Southampton at 5.40pm.
Torchbearers will parade the torch through the streets on a four-mile route around the city – including a lap of the pitch at St Mary’s Stadium.
It will finish its journey at Mayflower Park at 6.49pm, where an evening celebration will take place featuring British rapper Wretch 32. Civic chiefs have urged people to arrive early for that particular event, which has a 15,000 capacity.
