A HAMPSHIRE mum will be sentenced today after being found guilty of murdering her mother-in-law with a rolling pin andf then lying to cover her tracks.

Rajvinder Kaur even forced her nine-year-old son to see his grandmother lying dead in a bloodsoaked bathroom in a bid to try and fix her own alibi.

But today the mum-of-two is facing life behind bars for her crime after jurors saw through her story and found her guilty of murder.

Kaur had initially lied about playing any part in the death of 56-year-old Baljit Kaur Buttar, who was found with fatal injuries to her head, neck and body.

Instead 37-year-old Kaur had suggested Mrs Buttar, who was found naked and dead in the bath, had either slipped and banged her head or suffered a heart attack.

She initially went on trial in October last year accused of the murder – but, just as the evidence was almost finished, the case at Winchester Crown Court had to be abandoned when Kaur changed her story and suddenly admitted killing Mrs Buttar, claiming manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

For the past two weeks Kaur has been tried again and was yesterday found guilty of murder by a jury of eight men and four women, who took just over two hours to reach their verdict.

The court has heard how Kaur – who was living in the UK illegally after her visa expired – made repeated attempts to mislead police, the courts and even her own psychiatrist.

In the moments after the murder on February 25, 2011, she set about covering her deadly attack, cleaning the wooden rolling pin to get rid of the blood and washing her clothes.

She even tried to establish part of an alibi by making her nine-year-old son see his grandmother dead and covered in blood.

The court heard how the youngster had run out into Broadlands Road, Swaythling , Southampton , begging a passer-by to let him use a phone and call an ambulance to help Mrs Buttar, who was visiting from India and staying with the family for six months.

Her murder took place just two days before she was due to return home.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found Kaur washing her mother-in-law’s body with a handheld shower over the bath.

Doctors who assessed Kaur while she was held on remand had described the killing as “a blitz attack that continued with a passion”, adding that she had suffered a “catastrophic loss of control”.

During the two-week trial, jurors heard how Kaur claimed she had been provoked into losing all self-control by Mrs Buttar, who was unkind, called her names and made threats against her.

Family members who gave evidence during the trial also told how Mrs Buttar was not happy about her son Iqbal’s marriage to Kaur in 1999.

Kaur, who came to live in Southampton in late 2008 or early 2009, will be sentenced today to life imprisonment when she appears before Winchester Crown Court.
