WHAT is whooping cough and how do you know your child has it?

It is highly contagious bacterial infection of the lungs and airways.

Whooping cough usually begins with a persistent dry and irritating cough.

Other symptoms include runny or blocked nose, sneezing, watering eyes, sore throat, slightly raised temperature.

It progresses to intense bouts of coughing lasting up to two minutes, a “whoop” sound with each sharp intake of breath after coughing, bringing up thick phlegm, vomiting after coughing.
