Mike Tyson can't find venue for Hampshire show Mike Tyson can't find venue for Hampshire show

IN his prime he was one of the biggest box office attractions in world sport.

Commanding fees of millions of pounds a time, Mike Tyson’s boxing fights brought in huge global television audiences.

But 30 years on, the controversial heavyweight is struggling to find a location in Hampshire to host him after a second venue pulled out of his £150-a-head An Evening With Mike Tyson show.

Fareham Town Football Club had stepped in to have the event after bosses at Portsmouth Guildhall pulled the plug on his appearance there following comments he made about US politician Sarah Palin.

But now the leader of Fareham Borough Council, Sean Woodward, has stepped in to ask Fareham Town Football Club not to host the former world champion.

Despite the latest setback, organisers refused to be knocked out and have vowed that the show will go on.

The row over the show started when charity Rape Crisis appealed to Guildhall entertainment bosses not to stage the question-andanswer session with 46-year-old Tyson, who was jailed in 1992 for raping an 18-year-old beauty pageant contestant.

They said they feared that treating the boxer as a legend could have a serious effect in silencing victims of sexual assaults.

So the promoters turned to privately- run Fareham Town Football Club, which initially agreed to stage the event.

Councillor Woodward said that as the football club leases its land from Fareham Borough Council he was able to ask them to reconsider their decision.

He said: “I stepped in because of the appalling reputation of Tyson – he just didn’t sound like somebody we needed performing on our land in Fareham.

“I called the owner and he cancelled it straight away, to his credit.

“It wasn’t going to do the football club any good – the organisers will have to find somewhere else and I hope it won’t be Fareham.”

Andy Foreman, of the WCBC, who is organising the event, criticised Councillor Woodward for stepping in, saying: “This is about something which happened years and years ago.

“The council are trying to be dogooders saying they do not want this type of person in Fareham but it is becoming vindictive now.

“The message to people with tickets is that I will fight to get this event on no matter what. It will happen. We are finding another venue and will let the Daily Echo know as soon as we have one.

“I spoke to Mike Tyson’s management and apparently he is very upset and very disappointed about this.

“This is his first trip to the south coast and all he wants to do is to talk about boxing, have something to eat and have some photos taken with fans.”

I think there's some room in my local telephone kiosk! And it's full of urine just like what he's doing by touring the UK.

Great! No great loss at all to us then! We certainly DON'T need that indignified, common thug touring here...

Indignified and common, are they not characteristics of the majority at that end of the M27, however, I believe it is a loss to many boxing fans, his era of boxing was the last time the heavyweight division was truly exciting and worth staying up until 4 in the morning to watch a fight, his story is one I would be interested in hearing without sensorship.

But it wasn't. So this isn't relevant. The entire world isn't obliged to adopt a victim mentality by proxy.

Let's not forget the right wing 'Political correctness gone mad' brigade who say it was years ago are the same people who would hang rapists. Go figure.

However, whilst I have no real issues with legal immigration, I wonder how many british convicted rapists would be allowed entry to the USA for a tour?

Killers write books which become best sellers, do those that purchase them by the same logic support their crime ?
Tyson was one of if not the most exciting boxers of our time, consistent with many poor and non educated people from the street they are used and financially abused by those 'promoting' them, Don King a convicted murderer has been entertained by governments the world over...Tyson's guilt was not overwhelming and left many doubters, give him the platform and the people can vote with their feet.

If there was a legitimate reason for the British rape convict to be visiting the USA, there's no real reason why they wouldn't be allowed entry to the USA. It would mean a fair amount of bureaucracy for them, but still perfectly possible. Don't believe the hype. All this "nobody with a criminal record is allowed into the USA" nonsense is exactly that: nonsense.

Mike Tyson has served his sentence and has not re-offended, a sentence I might add that many people including prominent lawyers believe to be based on an unsafe conviction. A lot of evidence was left out and at least four jurors asked for a re-trial once they found this out. Desree Washington also has a history of false accusations of rape. The only two people who know what happened that night for sure are the two people concerned, but either way he spent three years in prison. If there is even a small chance he was not guilty, it is appalling that he is continuing to be treated this badly 20 years later. Because while groups like Aurora believe the woman is always the victim and the man always the perp, patronising nonsense in the extreme, anyone without a organisation to promote and with half a brain cell between them know that this is not the case. I am a "survivor" and I believe the ridiculous attitudes displayed by these organisations are patronising and offensive , but worse, do nothing to address the real issues or educate people beyond "the majority of men are bad". The ridiculous notion that men cannot work in refuges being a case in point, in fact some will not even let a woman escaping a violent home take her young son with her if he is 16.
Sexual attack is indeed an awful crime, however the harassment of a man who served his time 20 years ago, has mental health issues and has suffered the death of a child, certainly does not give you the moral highground.

Hyperbolic nonsense as usual from the people protesting. How on earth do you make the leap from Georgem's comments to he would be ok with rape?
And it is not just "your country "is it? And many of us do want to hear one of the greatest heavy weight boxers ever speak about boxing at a boxing do.
