ROMSEY residents are to benefit from new eco-friendly street lighting in the coming months.

Hampshire County Council has announced that its street lighting replacement programme, which is designed to create a more energy efficient system, will come to the town in the autumn.

Hundreds of lanterns and posts will be replaced as part of the scheme involving 150,000 street lights, illuminated signs and bollards across the county which are being replaced or upgraded using the latest technology in energy-saving lamps and dimming controls.

The result will be flexible lighting levels and white natural lighting designed to give clearer lighting, reduce light pollution and improve road safety and personal security.

The council said that much of its lighting is more than 30 years old and that the new lights will ensure compliance with carbon reduction targets.

These lights are awful, they have just been installed in my area. They are far too bright, keeping some people awake in bed at night and driving through them at night, well, good job I'm not epileptic, they flash something terrible when driving in and out of the beam.

Your lights must be a lot better than the ones in my area because the ones i have are about as much use as a chocolate fire guard and they throw awful shadows, they are about as good as the so-called eco ones they think we should use indoors the only eco thing about them is they use half as much electricity but you only get half the light, so in my opinion a complete and utter waste of money but its only our money the government like to throw around.

They are doing my road in six weeks time and I was looking forward to getting rid of the amber coloured lights. Now reading the two posts above I am not so sure it's going to be an improvement.

Time will tell I guess

Got one of them right outside my bedroom window, at night if i leave the blackout blind open it will light the entire flat.

Saves me money on lighting at night though!

Far too bright in my opinion - I wonder how many years it takes a lamp-post to save the amount of power used to manufacture it?

Had problems for the first couple of years of them being installed in Thornhill, they kept having blackouts regular as clockwork and each time they went out and came back on it would cause a momentary dip in power being provided to residential buildings, even took out the communal stairwell once but not the individual flats.
