Saints fans have been warned of new parking changes, ahead of the visit of Man United
12:28pm Friday 31st August 2012 in News
Saints fans are being warned of parking chaos ahead of the club’s clash with Manchester United this weekend.
Council chiefs have introduced a new traffic management system on the streets surrounding St Mary’s Stadium, which will come into effect this
weekend.
New yellow parking signs will be clearly displayed on eight different roads around the stadium, including Brintons Terrace, Chapel Road, Britannia Road and Granville Street, preventiong fans from parking there during the match.
And council bosses warned that anyone caught parking on the roads, between 1pm and 5pm on Sunday, will have their vehicle towed away.
The move is set to affect all motorists, including disabled blue badge holders, who usually park around the stadium.
It means that thousands of fans that are set to flock to the stadium for the visit of Manchester United on Sunday will be forced to find alternative travel or parking arrangements.
- For a full list of the roads affected by the new traffic management system, see tomorrow’s Daily Echo.

what a good idea to bring it in on the weekend of the man utd game call me cynical but i get the feeling this was deliberate by the council to make money still if they make enough we can expect a reduction in our local taxes
I admire your optimism but I think you'll be disappointed.

"Dear Mr Gillyman,
Due to a recent parking-related windfall, the council have decided to pass the savings on to those paying council tax, with each council tax payer receiving a rebate proportional to their contributions, and the amount saved by ripping off football fans. As such, please find enclosed a cheque for 0.0000000003 pence.
Yours sincerely
John C. Councilworker

Section 6.2a of The Private Security Industry Act 2001 (Licences) Regulations 2007 (Statuatory Instrument 2007 No. 810):
"the licensee shall not immobilise, remove or restrict a vehicle in accordance with paragraph 3 or 3A of Schedule 2 to the 2001 Act if the vehicle is an invalid carriage or if a valid disability badge is displayed on the vehicle or if the vehicle is an emergency vehicle which is in use"
Local authorities, and the police, can indeed arrange to tow a blue badged car.

They don't provide any park and ride schemes either for drivers... how would a disabled person manage to get to the ground safely from one ofthe other car parks if they don't have a carer with them? or are able to manipulate an electric wheelchair/manual wheelchair. if it is a person with LD, on crutches, severe heart/lung problems they'd have to get a taxi in all probability.... what a shame the council hasn't consulted with any disabled groups about this!

I don't follow football at all but, this is typical of Southampton council. 'Come to Southampton' they are always saying. And, what do they do? Penalize you when you do! I may be going back a few years but when the tall ships race was hosted by Southampton they said things like 'Southampton will be grid locked because of the visitors' and what happened? No one came to see the ships except the locals. Now the saints are back in top flight footie they come up with this load of cr&p! Surely things have been ok in the past regarding parking etc, if it aint broke don't fix it! Prixs

The whole basis of detering cars from parking around the ground is so that emergency vehicles can get through if necessary.
Just to be factual, the removal fee income generated goes to the removal company, not the council.
