Campaigners against plans for a new supermarket in Romsey have used the Romsey Show to take their message to the public.

Members of Say No to Tesco at Broadlands held a protest near to the show entrance and close to the site of the proposed store.

Around 20 people gathered with banners and placards reading 'Tesco plan to be here', 'Romsey Needs You! Say No To Tesco', 'SOS Save our Small Shops' and 'Test Valley or Tesco Valley'.

They were greeted with hooting horns and thumbs up from some drivers.

I'm not sure any of this will make any difference, companies like Tesco are big business. I like Romsey for its little shops, but there is not much to see. Is it not about jobs locally for people, especially school leavers, who are finding it difficult to find jobs.

So out of a population of 18,000 only 20 people protest against Tesco.
What a public show of support.

Why is there a bunch of kids in the picture? They don't know what is going on.

It's a shame when parents exploit their children in this way.

Tesco are taking over the world now & nobody really seems to care....
Apparently they build some stores without planning permission knowing that the council will only say that they have to apply for it retrospectively & not tell them to pull it down.

Money speaks volumes now I am afraid :(

I think the "for Tesco group" has the same, but how do you class local.
Plus I have seen people in the square sign both the for and against petition, with in minutes of each other.

People will sign petitions without really understanding what the are supporting. Thirty years ago I did an experiment which involved setting up a stall in Halifax and getting people signing a petition calling on the government to ban the chemical Dihydrogenmonoxcide. Amazingly 293 people signed it in the space of a few hours on a Saturday afternoon.
