Council’s £50,000 community chest open for grants
COMMUNITY and voluntary groups can apply for a slice of a £50,000 fund.
Small groups are invited to apply for grants between £100 and £5,000 from Southampton City Council ’s community chest.
It is now open to any not-for-profit organisation but the priority is to help unfunded community groups in the city.
Cllr John Noon, Cabinet member for efficiency and improvement, said: “Community chest is an invaluable scheme to help lots of good causes across our city.
“The money is to help with things like venue hire, volunteers’ expenses and sports equipment etc, and I would particularly encourage small, unfunded community and voluntary groups who need some financial help to come forward and apply for the next round.”
A spokesman for the council said the grant is likely to fund insurance, venue hire either for regular meetings or one-off events, project materials and publicity materials.
Training and transport costs can also get a cash injection as well as salaries for fixed-term staff on contracts of less than one year.
Previous beneficiaries include Chinese Arts Southampton which received £650 towards the costs of a fundraising event while Bitterne Youth Football Club were given £750 to help them set up a team.
Applications close on November 15.
Application packs are available by contacting Jo Hughes on 023 8083 4067 or via grants@southampton.gov.uk .
