Concern grows for missing Javan Tutton in Southampton

Javan Tutton Javan Tutton

POLICE are appealing for help locating a man who has been missing for 11 days.

Javan Tutton, 44, was being treated for anxiety at Antelope House, Brinton’s Terrace. He was last seen at about 11.30 am on the Thursday, September 11, when he was allowed to take a short walk alone.

Investigations have failed to find Mr Tutton since he left Antelope House. He has family ties at Blakeney, Gloucestershire, and previously has spent time in Winchester , Bournemouth, Poole and areas of Avon and Somerset. Enquiries at these locations have failed to find him. He may be sleeping rough.

Because he is without medication, there are fears for his state of mind.

Mr Tutton has thinning dark hair, brown eyes and is of medium build, but thin. When last seen, he was clean-shaven, wearing a white and blue long-sleeve chequered shirt, grey trousers and a black baseball cap. He carried a rucksack.

Anyone who has information about Mr Tutton’s location or who has seen him since September 6 is asked to contact police at Southampton on 101.

Well done Antelope House for losing him. Great system you have in place. I wonder what efforts they are making to find him or are valuable police resources being tied up instead?!

Whilst I have no idea about this particular individual, where possible people receiving mental health support are encouraged to live as independently as possible, and quite right too. The days of locking people up in asylums are long gone, thank goodness.

If patients/service users/clients are regarded as being a danger to themselves or others then they are housed in secure units such as Ravenswood. Antelope House is not that kind of unit.

The risk of someone going missing like this is certainly an acceptable one to take, when the alternative is unnecessarily imprisoning a large number of people against their will.

I'm certainly no expert, but I'm a former mental health worker so I have some idea what I'm on about. :-)

I hope Javan is soon found safe and well, and that anyone he comes into contact with treats him with kindness.
