THE future of a Hampshire leisure centre remains uncertain.

Council chiefs in Winchester are yet to decide whether they will renovate or replace River Park.

Campaigners Winchester Fit for the Future argue a new sports centre should be built at Bar End to replace River Park, which is in need of significant repairs, but the council has yet to commit any funding to the project.

Emma Back, of Winchester Fit for the Future, said more urgency was needed from the council to take advantage of sporting enthusiasm from the Olympics .

She said: “We have been trying to highlight this issue for a while and we have known for several years it would be crunch time after the Olympics. The increase in demand is very obvious and there is a need to get going.

“I think we feel quite strongly now that refurbishing River Park could be a short term sticking plaster but won’t do anything in terms of delivering the provision needed for the district.”
