Southampton's Apple Store in WestQuay expecting hundreds to queue for iPhone 5

HUNDREDS of Apple fans are expected to descend on WestQuay tomorrow when the latest generation of the iPhone hits the shelves.

Queues are expected to be round the block when the Apple store at WestQuay shopping centre opens at 8am when the iPhone 5 goes on sale.

Customers will need to queue at the Above Bar entrance on the High Street. They are the only doors that will open before 8am.

People receive a ticket as they enter the centre, guaranteeing access to the store in the order of their queue position.

A queue will then be formed outside the Apple store, when the centre opens at 8am any other customer can come and join the queue although ticket holders will get priority.

The multi-storey car park will be open from 5.30am and the Podium car park from 8am.

Other mobile phone retailers will open at 8am for sales of the new handset, which boasts a larger screen, thinner body and more processing power than its predecessor, the iPhone 4S.

Since Southampton Apple Store opened, it has become an annual event for hundreds of people to turn up early and eagerly queue for the latest Apple gadget, such as iPhones and iPads.

Just bizarre. I'm quite the Apple fan, I'll admit, but I cannot for the life of me work out why anybody would queue up like this, just to get hold of a consumer device a bit earlier than everybody else.

In other news, I've got the latest version of iOS installed on a device, and the new Apple Maps app sucks.

I agree. No street view or YouTube. Some other pretty good improvements though. I don't get the whole queuing overnight thing either. I'm told some retailers will sell out early due to pre orders ect but I'm pretty sure apple will have enough stock.

YouTube have their own - apparently superior - app now, and you can still use maps.google.com, but Google no longer provide Apple with maps, so they're having to build their own. It'll take some time to catch up apparently.

I have been in the Queue for just over 8 hours now, Just realised its the apple and not the orange store I wanted.
Just text my mate who was queueing at banana wharf. All this for ear phones.

Don't trust the new maps app as it still lists New York New York in Queensway as one of it POIs amongst many other errors!

I thought about queuing overnight, but decided it would be to intents.

Pfft, who wants a phone that doesn't come with the youtube app preinstalled or a superior map/gps app, I'm a happy android user for over a year and a half now, wouldn't touch the Iphone with a barge pole for love or... Well... Money, especially when I could get a Android device that has the same performance and a bigger screen and camera than the Iphone 5 for a fraction of the Iphone 5's price, the same goes for the Ipads and Ipods.
