Attempted abduction of child in city
Police in Southampton are investigating after a man tried to snatch a 12-year-old girl from the street as she walked to school this morning.
The youngster told police she was walking along Cuckmere Lane between Redbridge towers and Redbridge Community School at around 8.25am when a man in a white van pulled up and tried to grab her.
She managed to get away andget to school where the alarm was raised with teachers and police.
Officers have spent the day carrying out house to house enquiries in the area and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen what happened.
Detective Sergeant Keith McKay said: “We are investigating the incident and trying to establish exactly what happened.
"There have been no other reports about the van and we believe this was an isolated incident though we'd advise parents and their children to stay alert and report any suspicious incidents to us.
“We are treating the incident seriously and a number of officers are working on the case. We are currently speaking with the girl further and trying to trace the van.
"I'm asking for anyone who may have witnessed this incident or saw the van in the area to call Shirley CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers Anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

For child (sexual) attacks and general Murder, this Country really needs to bring back the death sentence..
It is costing some £250 pw, per inmate of taxpayers money, for what in many cases is a better lifestyle, with comfy bed and good food, than they would in the real world...

We need a more effective punishment for these crime to deter people,, a cushy prison sentence is not doing the trick.

Do you know how long the average prisoner spends on Death Row? Years and years and years. Do you know how many prisoners on Death Row actually get executed? Clue: not many.
People who bring the death penalty up as a solution to crime, usually haven't even got a casual grasp of the subject.

I appreciate that the Police need to find the pervert fast but surely asking house to house in the day time is rather pointless. If he's driving a van he'll more than likely be at work during the day time.

already pointed out the money or deterrent argument doesn't stand up.
We've moved on since then get over it......

y! Mentally ill and in human, no need for a lie detector, if the crime is against a child, as with this article ive stated above, and the accused is as guilty as sin, there is no option other than the death penalty.but no doubt the do gooders will speak up for his human rights.

What is your view on the death penalty being the correct punishment for child crime? are you implying that its to costly to bring it back, how much do you think it costs to keep scum who do these horrendous crimes in prison, surely the cost of keeping them locked up out weighs the cost of a piece of rope, and id give my services for free for pulling the trap door lever. I would suggest you take off your rose tinted glasses, all isn't so rosy. and it's about time people woke up!!!! Certain crimes deserve the death penalty, and a slow one at that.

You cannot compare our crime rates to that of America who have significantly more people, the evidence would have to be based on a county that has the same number of people as the UK. Death penalty will not deter people from committing crimes, however if they commit the crimes and are guilty then it will stop them doing it again.
It just seems to be happening a lot lately, there are more people in the uk than there were 20 years ago, so more murders, sexual offences etc.
It will never go away, prevention or cure???

This is a serious matter, sometimes an eye for eye is the only way to deal with these offenders, if they are bang to rights and there is enough evidence (ie DNA etc). then it would be safer for everyone if they brought back the death penalty.

At last some common sense, if they are guilty, the death penalty is the only answer, to keep **** footing around with this type of crime and do nothing but put them away for a few years is plain crazy, when will people wake up, seems to me only when its on their doorstep will they want proper action, as you rightly point out, these crimes are becoming a daily feature now, and that is the real issue, there is no real deterrent, and it's about time as a nation we got a grip and set one, The death penalty!!! These in human animals deserve nothing less, people will say, what about their human rights! well what about the children's rights!!!

Yes I agree, I think only the most serious of crimes should be given the consideration of the death penalty! Some people will always be repeat offenders. The police stick them opposite schools and parks too(or the council) either way the government need to readdress how they deal with these individuals. Times have changed, for some it's better however unfortunately for some it's even worse.

Nonetheless, I hope that parents out there take this incident as a prompt to talk to their children about what to do if approached by a stranger. I'll definitely be talking to mine.
